Monk Comes Down the Mountain OST - Yi Nian Zhi Jian (一念之间) (English translation)

Chinese

Yi Nian Zhi Jian (一念之间)

In The Span Of A Single Thought

In front of whom is spread mountain range shrouded in clouds and fog?
Pushing open the door, I am the person who is gazing at the scenery.
Spinning in a circle, [I] see the immortals beyond [this] immortal, the skies beyond [this] sky 1.
Between the heaven and the earth, what I care about is that one glance.

The sense of propriety in that scroll of message [you] left with splashed ink 2
Hundreds and thousands of times, I've silently read it within my heart.
Having gone around in a circle, the enlightenment and meditation of those years—
I still cannot completely explain [them] in front of you.

Look, the road before [us] curves.
See, flowers fall beside the pond.
Listen, [the music being] played [as if one] wants the strings to snap.

Meet [one another somewhere on] the broad earth, [beneath] the round sky.
Walk about [in this] mundane world of the common folk.
[Everything happens] merely in the span of a single thought.

You've been here; I remember. And that's what forever is—
Like a tendril of smoke, impossible to get rid of, lingering all day.
You turn around; I pass by. And that's what the mortal world is—
Like a drop of water, in love with to your fingertips, ever so unwilling [to fall away].

You've been here (been here); I remember. And that's what forever is—
Like a tendril of smoke, impossible to get rid of, lingering all day.
You turn around; I pass by. And that's what the mortal world is—
Like a drop of water, most delighted and absolutely willing to be in love with your fingertips.

  • 1. This is derived from the saying: (Lit. There are people beyond [this/each/any] person, there are skies beyond [this/each/any] sky.) It means that there is always someone better, something greater, than whom or what you know.
  • 2. a. b. 留白 is literally "leave white". It can refer to leaving a message or, more literally, to leaving negative/empty space in a work of art.
