Γιὰ τὸν Ἀμμόνη, ποῦ πέθανε 29 ἐτῶν, στὰ 610 (Yià tòn A̓mmóni, pou͂ péthane 29 e̓to͂n, stà 610) (English translation)

For Ammonis, who died 29 years old, in 610 A.D.

Raphael, a few lyrics they ask of you
to compose, for the epitaph of the poet Ammonis.
Something very elegant and fine. You will be able,
you are the right one, to write as it is suitable
for the poet Ammonis, our own.
Certainly you will speak for his poems—
but speak for his beauty too,
for his fine beauty that we loved.
Your greek is always good and musical.
But the whole of your craft, we need it now.
Into a foreign language our sorrow and our love pass.
Pour your egyptian feeling into the foreign language.
Raphael, may your lyrics be written thus
so that they have, you know, [something] of our life in them,
so that the rhythm and every phrase to declare
that for an Alexandrian, an Alexandrian is writing.

Thanks!
