August
August by Nikos Papazoglou
But why has this song to be sad
It feels like it cut a piece of my heart
At this moment that I am full of joy
It rose up to my lips and drowned me
Save yourself for the end, you tell me
I love you but I don’t have the words to tell you
And this is an unbearable sadness
I melt from the pain because I feel it too
That the road we’re on is impassable
Be strong it will pass you’ll tell me
Refrain
How can I forget her loose flowing hair
On the sand as waterfalls bathed her
As she leaned over me, thousands of kisses, diamonds that she generously offered to me
I’ll go even if it’s bad for me
In which ectasy in a magical dance
Could such a creature have been born
From which distant start came the light
That hid in her two eyes
And me the lucky guy who saw it
Inside her sight a tiny sky
Lightens clouds and unfolds itself
But when night falls it’s full of light
August moon rises up and from inside shines the prison

As a musician, I first heard this song in the late 1980's.
I started to learn the song (to add to my repetoire) and began playing it in Greek bars/restauramts and clubs.
As an Englishman I got a lot of praise and comments on my abilty and interpretation of the song in Greek ;-)
I had the opportunity to meet the singer-sonwriter/composer himself, Nikos Papzoglou in his studio in Kato Toumba in Salonica and he very kindly went over the whole song with me word by word, verse by verse and between us we were able to get to a good understanding in English of the song.
The song itself is a song about a girlfriend of his that wes on drugs/going through a difficult time and his reaction to it.
I had the honour and pleasure of spending time with Nikos on a few clubs in Salonica at that time and of hearing him with his band perform this song a few times.
To Greeks, this song is very special and to this day is still held in great esteem.
A beautiful song with special memories for me.
Thank you Nikos...... kai yeia sou!
