Whistling Gypsy Rover

A gypsy rover came over the hill
Down through the valley so shady
He whistled and he sang till the green woods rang
And he won the heart of the lady

She left her father's castle gate
And left her own fine lover
She left her servants and the estate
To follow her gypsy rover

Hey, she's gone with the whistling gypsy rover
Left without a hope of coming home
Hey, she's gone with the whistling gypsy rover
Gone through the woods where the gypsies roam

Last night she slept on a goose feather bed
With silken sheets for cover
Tonight she sleeps on the cold, cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover

Her father saddled up his fastest steed
To roam that valley all over
He sought his daughter at great, great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover

Hey, she's gone with the whistling gypsy rover
Left without a hope of coming home
Hey, she's gone with the whistling gypsy rover
Gone through the woods where the gypsies roam
2x

Gone to the woods where the gypsy's home
2x

Versiones: #1#2

2x

Lol, don't get confused "over the hill" isn't used idiomatically in this context

BratBrat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 14:11

Well, "He wasn't at his sights till the queen will drink" is much more confusing for it makes no sense. It should be "He whistled and he sang till the green woods rang" like in the other song. BTW, "She left her father, Gotham King" should be "She left her father's castle gate", but that's not so critical.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 14:23

Thank you! I was pulling my hair wondering who would get drunk sooner - the queen or I Cry smile

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 14:50

I thought we agreed that lyrics must match what is sung, Brat?
I also prefer the words in the other version, that i cited...but that's not what he sings. And the other version is sooo boring.
Surprised, unlike MZ, you didn't discuss Queen being a daughter.
M, pulling hair? Are you channeling young Maria?

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 14:49

Only if “channeling” is misspelled “Chanel”,

BratBrat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 15:25

First I heard it like "He whistled and he sang till the green would ring" but next moment I thought it should be "wood" there. Teeth smile

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 15:33

Teeth smile

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 19:20

Omg, I heard Gotham King... Checked again other version, saw castle gate, still heard wrong. Darn, this state of existence. thanks, everyone!

Sarah RoseSarah Rose    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 19:17

I think you're right that he's saying "He whistled and he sang till the green woods rang." I couldn't tell what he was saying here, but after reading this comment and listening to it again, it's correct.

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 14:45

[@Sarah Rose] could you please lend your ear to see if transcription is accurate? Thanks in advance

Sarah RoseSarah Rose    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 19:13

Sure, here are my changes:

A gypsy rover came over the hill --> I feel like he's saying "That gypsy rover" here, but it doesn't change the meaning.

Bounced through the valley so shady --> Down through the valley so shady

He wasn't at his sights till the queen will drink --> He whistled and he sang to the queen (well trained)? I can't tell what he's saying in the last part, it doesn't make sense and I can't think of what would fit. It doesn't make sense that the queen is the daughter because a queen would be married to a king already. Then again, it does say she already had a lover. I'm thinking the last part is a different word that I just can't identify.

She left her father, Gotham King --> She left her father's castle gate

She left her servants and the estate --> She left her servants and estate

Hey, she's gone with the whispering gypsy rover --> Hey, she's gone with the/a? *whistling* gypsy rover

Gone through the woods where gypsies walked --> Gone to the woods where the gypsies roam

Her father summoned up his fastest steed --> Her father saddled up his fastest steed

Sarah RoseSarah Rose    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 19:19

Adding a correction - the part I couldn't hear well should be "He whistled and he sang till the green woods rang." This fits and also eliminates the discrepancy about the queen. Regular smile

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 01:19

This makes perfect sense, but, I guess LT queen defined it as a substance related Teeth smile

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 21:24

till the queen would trank
?

AntonWinterAntonWinter    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 21:28

Если не ошибка, то to trank (сокращение от tranquilizer) = to relax

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 21:35

I knew it, alcohol and drugs... Again... Joking, of course

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Lun, 18/02/2019 - 21:49

sandringsandring    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 09:46

Regular smile

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 13:18

Lol. I think, we will interprete it as he sang until she was completely taken by him.
This is a much livelier version than the original, don't you agree?

BratBrat    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 16:26

Let's look at what we've got in the end:
There was a king (supposedly living in Gotham and since that being very wise) who in his infinite wisdom married his own daughter and thus made her a queen. The wife/daughter/queen took this mishap very much to heart though she had another lover, besides, lost her marbles abit and began to seek for some substances to trank down her pangs. Then a gypsy bounced over the hill, whistling so loud that timber began ringing, and took her with him to the thick woods where shrooms blossom. The king flung himself onto the best steed to chase after the runaways but alas -- they're already far away from the goose feather bed sleeping on the wet cold ground.
A nice song, indeed. Teeth smile

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 17:48

Haha! It made more sense when woods rang instead of Queen tranked, but alas, we were spared the logic. So, I choose that gypsy indeed stole the queen, but she wasn't married - only had father who with great speed, and all on his own, went to search for her. Else, incest, adultery, probably murder - your favorite - opus time!,

ingirumimusnocteingirumimusnocte    Mar, 19/02/2019 - 17:56

I also hear "till the green woods rang". This trank story sounds really fishy to me. "trank" is not even a verb.

sandringsandring    Mié, 20/02/2019 - 07:27

That's a weird song. You hear exactly what you think you'll hear. Now that I want to hear "Till the green woods rang" I hear it. If I want to hear Gotham Gate, I hear that. Deanna, maybe you should go to that classical version. It's simpler. It's up to you. Regular smile

ingirumimusnocteingirumimusnocte    Mié, 20/02/2019 - 09:18

"trank" is not even mentioned in the UD, and can only be a noun in more usual UK and US dictionaries.
The guy would have to invent his own English to use it there.
It's not impossible, but not the most likely possibility.

sandringsandring    Mié, 20/02/2019 - 09:21

I've changed it. Actually, I promised myself once to never transcribe non-natives. Never ever again. Better native death metal for Dionisius. Regular smile
