A lot of people in Mexico are using WhatsApp to connect with English speakers. The idea is they can practice/learn English from you and vice versa.

Does anyone know if you have to give your real phone number? Do you call them with your phone? Is it instant messaging or what?

There are several WhatsApp applications to choose from. I need something free and easy. Can anyone make a recommendation? I have an Apple tablet.

Thanks!!

What d'you mean? As far as I know there's only one Whatsapp app. Unless you mean messaging apps in general?

You have to exchange numbers with the other person. You can instant message them, call them or videocall them.

Not necessarily, as you can join a group via an invitation (you receive a link to join via email or message) without giving your number to people you don't know. But you need to use your real phone number and there's nothing you can do about it. You can be put in groups of instant messaging, just like Facebook Messenger and Instagram/Twitter DM's.

I typed WhatsApp into the apple store and several things came up with the name WhatsApp in the title: messaging, messenger, messenger WhatsApp++, secure messages (protect your conversation), multi tab, what’s up for WhatsApp. That’s six to choose from.

How do I receive the link without giving my phone number? What are the risks? I’ve been going to HiNative and people keep posting requests for study partners. There is no private message room.

Apologies,
Just had a peek at your profile and saw you have native English :)) If you are looking to improve your Spanish, I can help, we can chat in Spanish, if you want to!

They're usually just restylings of the official app. Some have some unofficial special features in it like changing the theme colour and so on. In terms of functionality, they have nothing more than ths original Whatsapp.

Someone who is already in a group (or its admins) and can give you the link. I think they can do it via email, but you'll need your real phone number anyway.
