As you all know it is possible and even encouraged to add a link to a video of the song so it'll be easier to find and listen to.

And as you also all know these links often become obsolete as videos are, for various reasons, removed or become unavailable on youtube or any other platform.

So I'd like to suggest that the person who added the song get a notification on when the link becomes obsolete so they may update it, there must be a not so complicated way to check that automatically.

or even something more complicated like an automated search on youtube to find a video with a similar title, which is something that may be not so straightforward to implement, or even useful, but just throwing the suggestion out there.

For me personally it really helps discover new songs ~

Editors and Mods actually have a tool for that purpose. It reports to us either pages without videos or those that have been updated.

it appears, youtube a couple of months ago started "Topic" videos for famous artists. so example the song "Let it Be" by the beatles will appear by performer "Topic - Beatles".. it seems that these videos will not be deleted because they belong to an official or semi-official channel respectively. but if an individual posts the same song and the channel will get dropped due to a copyright problem, which now happens more and more, then the video is gone. so i highly recommend when adding new videos. Always use the "Topic - Artist" Video.

I will second this. YT Topic vids should be a priority choice, even if there is just a static picture of the album cover.
We should support legal copyright owners and not give more views for youtubers who make money on talents of others (often deceased). It might be even beneficial for LT's own legal status.
I would recommend Mods/Admins to review this video policy and to bring YT Topics to attention of every editor, thus eliminating personal preferences in selecting vids. Also, it will save a lot of Editors' work, since links to YT illegal vids of popular content will not last long.

I'd also suggest YT topic videos if only all countries could access it. Unfortunately, for most of the Topics videos, many countries still can't access them, and it apparently varies depending on the video, which refrain me from suggesting making YT topics videos a priority. I still often use them when there are no better choices. But fortunately, few artists/labels tend to delete everything.

"many countries still can't access them"
you could still use a proxy server. it might be more complicated, but should work.

Could you please provide a solid example of an instance when a certain YT Topic is blocked in a country? You sound like it is rather common. I would expect that whole YT could be blocked, rather than an artist. Anyway, a secondary link could be placed below the topic vid, in submitter's comments.

Definitely, it is not a good option to add videos from non-official YT channels because in most cases, those videos end up being removed for copyright infringement. And Editors/Mods have to do all the job here, replacing the videos.
When I was an Editor I have changed a huge amount of videos for the official ones to not have that problem.
Recently I've seen some users adding official videos, but not everyone do that. They should.

It's honestly rare to see videos being removed for copyright infringement, otherwise YT channels like 7clouds, 8D TUNES, etc, and the hundreds of Nightcore's Youtube Channels wouldn't exist. Not to mention that it would make them lose money to always remove everything since Youtube already has the tools to detect music and place copyright in order to monetize the original artist. In spite of all this, I know it's always possible that the video will be deleted, I've already replaced several of them, and always with something official, but I avoid some Topic videos because I know it's not always the best option either, for reasons I've already explained. And I know from experience that Topic videos will annoy a lot of people, that's even why, for example, some rooms in Plug DJ forbid them. I think it's mostly important to focus on official music videos, or lyrics videos that the artists upload.

You've all seem to have side stepped the issue, but the fact remains that for many obscure artists, old songs, or some versions of the song,
it often happens that the video is deleted. I'm talking about the many cases where even the best choice is taken down.

Of course people should choose the most relevant video, but you've completely missed my point @florxquin, why not create an automatic notification to the *publisher* of the song so a mod doesn't have to do that?

And if the tool reports what has been updated does that mean that it reports what has stopped working?

No I haven't. I understand your point and I think is a pretty good idea.
