Hi. It seems that if you edit your translation the same day you published it, the original time-stamp' hour doesn't change.

I have seen people copying parts of another translation published shortly after them, but since the time-stamp doesn't change, It just looks that the second translation is a copy of the first one (while it's the other way round). I know that revisions section correctly time-stamps the changes, but that section is available only to LT staff and the translator.

[@LT]

EDIT: By copying, I don't mean copying all of the second translation. Copying pieces here and there, maybe with some superficial editing, will just create the reasonable doubt of 'edited' duplication, as the time-stamp says the first translation is still published before the second one.

I'm not sure whether this is a bug, it is probably intended in order to allow someone to edit the translation shortly after publishing it without it showing up as "edited". Other websites (e.g. Reddit) also do this, although usually for a shorter time.
The translation copying is indeed a problem but, as you said, admins and mods can always verify when the translation was actually edited if the real author reports it.

What's wrong with showing that somebody changed his/her translation after a short time?

The "edited" tag is shown after 24 hours from the time of publication. If you make any changes to your translation before that time frame, the tag won't be shown. I don't think it's a bug either, I've always thought it was on purpose. I personally prefer it this way, I'd get a little bit annoyed seeing that the translation appears as edited just because I forgot a comma and added it shortly after...

We have 'drafts' in LT, so usually checks and revisions can be done before actually publishing the translation. Online text checkers (e.g. language tool, or similar ones) can also lower the chance of typos.

The point is, the 24 hours freeze on time-stamp provides a vulnerability. Assume someone sees a questionable translation, and gives an alternate translation right away. If the first translator copies part of the second translation, it seems to the viewer that the second translation is a (partial) duplicate. The second translator has a very high chance of not checking the first translation again, why should he?. The trick easily goes undetected, thanks to the time-stamp freeze.

I didn't mean a literal comma, I was just saying that you don't really need to have it shown as edited for minor adjustments after you have already published your translation (typos, a word that didn't convince you, a line that you realised could have been translated better and so on).

What you're saying is true, but who does that? Who copies a translation right away and who alters them significantly some hours after publication? If you see someone do that, you can just report them. Sounds like a non-issue to me.

Is it a crime to find mistakes/typos, etc. ?
Even weeks, months, years later?

[@Igeethecat] I'm sorry, are you saying that I say so? Or are you saying it's OK to edit translations? I meant the latter. Nothing wrong with editing your translation, and it doesn't need 'hiding'.

[@Anerneq] it actually happened. I can't say what's on the mind of the people who do such a thing. Can you tell me what's in the mind of people who publish GT translations, or edited version of it, in LT? Or on the minds of those who publish others' translation as their own?

As I showed, the current policy provides an almost perfect loophole, and the perpetrator will almost certainly get away with that. The chance that the second translator checks the first translation, or remember it, is low in such cases. So, the chance of the targeted person noticing, and reporting, it is very low.

Ok, let's start with your definition of "bug". To me, if it is recognized and documented, it is not a bug, it is the feature.

GT is not acceptable in any form, but sometimes lyrics are so blunt, that GT makes a perfect sense. LOL

But anyway, I think I am missing your point. Do you want some time restrictions or what?

You can call it whatever you want. If a watch doesn't show correct time, it is not working properly.

I don't see any 'documentation' about the issue in LT rules and FAQ. What documentation are you talking about?

Simple: true time-stamp showing the real time of change. Fixing the proven vulnerability.

Oh, well, insider's joke

And you want to put a timestamp on translations?

Why? Your vulnerability doesn't make any sense to me

Do I have to prove myself to you? Is it one of the things 'recognized and documented' somewhere?

If it were, I'd be given life - some of my translations of 10 years ago are a reason of embarrassment for me nowadays - thankfully we can edit them after submitting ;)

We should get another tag for those prior embarrassments

1 - stupid enough
2 - young enough
3 - proud!
