You Have Owned My Heart

You have possessed my heart under the law of love, there is a Lord watching you
So do not kill me purposefully, because I am a stranger,
And if you must.. then that is very strange
And even stranger to me is that the swords and daggers-
Bleed in the hands of the people, though swords are male 1
And I find strange this and this, and that and that-
And a gazelle hunting the lions as they escape 2
And I find it strange that [the daggers] in their hands
Burn with fire, though palms are seas 3

  • 1. The word used. "تحيض", is literally "menstruates". The narrator likens the bloodiness of a sword in combat to menstruation, and as swords are male in Arabic (a gendered language), this is strange to him.
  • 2. This refers to the role reversal that the narrator perceives- here, the gazelle is the woman, wielding power over him despite being weaker
  • 3. Palms likened to seas is a common trope in Arabic poetry and literature, referring to generosity. Here the narrator sees the hurt being caused (ie, fire) by who is usually the most generous (hands, here compared to the sea)
