Black Blood

Versiones: #1#2
I carry my heart in my hands*
I wear my love under my skin
I bear my soul in my eyes
It looks out from behind thinnest glass

I don’t want to be a decoration on your walls
There’s just one thing that breaks me
I just don’t want to lose myself
No, I won’t sing your songs!

I’m still living, still
I’m still giving, still
I stumble onwards
Forwards!
Downwards!
In my veins the black blood flows

I bear the truth upon my tongue
I wear only the black that pleases me
I bear the heavy burden of the world
upon my narrow shoulders, as Atlas did

You all are so colorful and garish*
You are the light, I am its absence
You positive, I antithesis
You are so gray when you get mixed

I’m still living, still
I’m still giving, still
I stumble onwards
Forwards!
Downwards!
In my veins the black blood flows

I place my heart in your hands
I paint my love upon your skin*
I see the soul in your eyes
That looks out from behind thinnest glass

I’m still living, still
I’m still giving, still
I stumble onwards
Forwards!
Downwards!
In my veins the black blood flows

Once again English's lack of a plural 'you' is showing. The distinction is very important in the song, because until the end he's talking to a crowd (the world), and then he addresses one specific person in whom he sees himself reflected.

*tragen is one of those few German words that we use more specific words in English for (usually it's the other way around). I took artistic license and diversified it a lot.

*'bunt' and 'farbenfroh' are very similar words that would probably just be 'colorful' in English. I chose 'garish' as the second translation because I believe it was the lyricist's intent to convey that the colorfulness is gaudy and unnecessary.

*'auftragen' here would be to apply makeup, but that doesn't sound very poetic, so I just went with 'paint.'
