Trollkjærring

Æ hveite Eline Plassen,
og æ bor førr meg sjøl uten onga og mann.
Dem si at æ hjelpes av djvæveln,
forr å klare seg sjøl, nei, det går ikkie an.

De si: Pass dekk førr Eline,
ho kan meir enn sett Fadervår.
Ho end' i hælvetes flamma.
Trollpakk og heksa det ev veien dem går.

Trollkjærring, hore, heks:
Du skal brenne i evig tid!
Trollkjærring, hore. Heks:
aldri slepp du fri!

Dem si at æ e ei hore,
dem si at æ e et hælvetes troll.
Dem si at æ reise til Blokksberg
fredag klokka tolv.

Dam kasta stein når æ går forbi.
Det æ'kje lite en stakkar må tåle.
Æ veit kossen enden på visa vil bli,
de vil se mæ brenne, de vil ha mæ på bålet

Trollkjærring, hore, heks:
Du skal brenne i evig tid!
Trollkjærring, hore. Heks:
aldri slepp du fri!

Witch

My name is Eline Plassen,1
and I live by myself with no husband nor child.
They say that I'm helped by the devil,2
for it is not possible for one to live on his own.3

They say: watch out4 for Eline,
her sorcery is stronger than our Lord's Prayer.5
She'll end up in the fires of hell,
Trolls and witches, that's the way they go.6

Sorceress, whore, witch:7
You will burn for all eternity!
Sorceress, whore. Witch:
we'll never let you go!8

They say that I am a whore,
they say that I am a demon of hell9.
They say I travel to The Witches' Altar10
(every) Friday at midnight.

They throw stones when I walk by.11
The things you put up with as an outcast.12
I know how this story ends,
they will see me burn, they will have me on the stake.

Sorceress, whore, witch:
You will burn for all eternity!
Sorceress, whore. Witch:
we'll never let you go!

A couple for corrections and suggestions:

1. "dem si at æ hjelpes av djvæveln, forr å klare seg sjøl" translates as "they say that I'm helped by the devil in order to make it on my own."

2. The following sentence "nei, det går ikkie an" is a bit ambigous. It refers to the fact that she is helped by the devil - but if it is true that she is, it should be interpreted as "no, it is not okay (that she is helped by the devil)," but if it is false, it should be interpreted as "no, it is not okay (that they say so)." However, the translation in either case is "no, it is not okay."

3. Your translation of "ho kan meir enn sett Fadervår" is good, but the literal translation in the footnotes is a bit off - it should go as "she can do (= she is able to do) more than (in) the Lord's Prayer."

4. "trollpakk og heksa det ev veien dem går" translates as "trolls and witches, that's the way they go" (referring to the fires of hell in the preceding sentence). There is a comma missing in the Norwegian lyrics.

5. "aldri slepp du fri" translates as "never you will be let go," i.e. it is in the passive voice. Nevertheless, I'd would say your translation is good.

6. "det æ'kje lite en stakkar må tåle" translates as "it isn't little that a small/weak/etc. creature must endure/put up with."

7. In the sentence "they will to see me burn, they will have me on the stake," I would have used the verb "want" instead of "will" - even though, I am aware of the fact that the verb "will" is perfectly usable as well.

Ohh...wow, I was hoping for someone to see it, glad you did :) there were indeed several parts I wasn't all that sure about.

Regarding the corrections :

1. I was certain it said "they say that I'm helped by the devil" but then the rest confused me, and still does. How come "forr å klare seg sjøl" translates to "in order to make it on my own"? shouldn't it be "forr å klare meg sjøl"? I thought the "seg" reflected back to the devil which doesn't make much sense either.

2. From the full context, it sounds like she's not really a witch, and that this is all a witch hunt story. Regarding your correction, I still don't see how it makes more sense - even after fixing the previous line?

3. I thought about it when translating, not sure it's better, but it's definitely more literal. Anyway, fixed it.

4. Fixed! yes I was very confused here as well with how Folque chose to write the text. Also, I wasn't even sure "ev" was a word, I thought it might be a typo of "av".

5. I know, but as you said it, sometimes the literal translation doesn't work that well and needs to be modified which is what I did. I added your version in the footnote.

6. Ok, that indeed makes more sense. I can't say I like how it's written though, there's still something slightly off about it. I modified it a bit, but still not happy with it.

7. Thought about using "want" too, actually you can see I wrote "they will to see me burn" mistakenly because of it. But I think, the previous line implies a more deterministic outcome towards the end.

Anyway, Thanks a lot!

Edit - changed 6

1./2. The reflexive pronoun 'seg' also confused me. After re-reading it, however, I have found the right solution. What baffled me was that it doesn't start with a capital letter, and thus I thought it was continuing from the preceding line. However, it should be read on its own. Thus, 'Forr å klare seg sjøl, nei, det går ikkie an' translates as 'For to live on your own, no, that's not possible' (read 'for' like 'because').

6. I would go for something like 'It is not little a poor creature has to put up with.' The witch is referring to herself in third person.

7. It does, indeed.

1. Yes!!! great! that's it! :)

6. Still doesn't sound that good. I changed it again, and left it in the fn.
