Ihaj csuhaj

Hull a szilva a fáról,
Most jövök a tanyáról,
Ej, haj, ruca, ruca, kukorica, derce.
Egyik ága lehajlott,
Az én rózsám elhagyott,
Ej, haj, ruca, ruca, kukorica, derce
Kis kalapom fekete,
Pávatollu van benne,
ej, haj, ruca, ruca, kukorica, derce.

Hej, Dunáról fúj a szél,
Szegény embert mindig ér
Dunáról fúj a szél
Ha Dunáról nem fújna,
Ilyen hideg sem volna
Dunáról fúj a szél
Hej Jancsika, Jancsika,
Mért nem nőttél nagyobbra,
Dunáról fúj a szél.
Nőttél volna nagyobbra
Lettél volna katona
Dunáról fúj a szél.
Hej, Dunáról fúj a szél,
Feküdj mellém majd nem ér
Dunáról fúj a szél.
Nem fekszem én kend mellé,
Mert nem leszek a kendé
Dunáról fúj a szél

Érik a szőlő,
Hajlik a vessző,
Bodor a levele,
Két szegény legény
Szántani menne,
De nincsen kenyere.
Van vöröshagyma,
A tarisznyában,
Keserű magában,
Szolgalegénynek,
Hej, a szegénynek
Kevés a vacsora!
Huncut a gazda,
Nem néz a napra,
Csak a szép asszonyra.
Huncut a vendég,
Mert mindig innék,
Ha volna, ha volna.

Ó, mely sok hal terem az nagy
Balaton-bahha-rahha-rahaha,
Minden ágon egy mérő makk a
Bakony-bahha-rahha-rahaha,
Örül ott a halász, rikongat a kanász
örömé-behhe-rehhe-rehehe.
Szépen illik a sült kappan a
cintál-bahha-rahha-rahaha.
Jó bort mérnek Füreden és
Kaposvár-bahha-rahha-rahaha,
Igyál jó pajtásom, tőled nem sajnálom,
sokáig éhhé-réhhé-réhéhélj!
Addig kell a vasat verni,
amíg tüzehhe-rehhe-rehehes,
Semmit sem ér olyan hordó,
amely ürehhe-ehhe-rehehes.
Köll hát bele tenni,
ki köll aztán venni,
ha szüksé-gehhe-ehhe-rehhehes.

Ihaj csuhaj

The plums are falling from the tree
I just came from the farm
Ej, haj, mallard, mallard, corn, grits1
One of its branches has bent down
My rose has left me
Ej, haj, mallard, mallard, corn, grits
My small hat is black
It's got a peacock feather in it
Ej, haj, mallard, mallard, corn, grits

Hej, the chilly river air
Always makes the men shiver
Wind blows from the river2
If it wouldn't blow from there
It would not be such cold air
Wind blows from the river
Hej, Johnny boy, Johnny boy
You didn't grow very tall
Wind blows from the river
If you grew a lot bigger
You could've been a soldier
Wind blows from the river
Hej, the chilly river air
Lie with me, it is warmer
Wind blows from the river
Next to you, I won't lie
I won't be yours, it's futile
Wind blows from the river

The grapes are getting ripe
A vines are bending down
Their leaves are curly
Two poor lads
Would go plowing
But they don't have any bread
There's yellow onion
In the haversack3
It's bitter in itself
For a farmhand
Hej, the poor lad
That's a meager dinner!
The mischievous4farmer
Doesn't look at the sun
But only the beautiful women
The guest is mischievous
Because he would always drink
If there was something to drink, if there was something to drink

Oh, there're so many fish in the big
Balaton5
One mérő6of acorns on every branch in the
Bakony7
The fisherman is happy there, the swineherd is screaming
in joy
The roasted capon8fits very nicely into
the plate
They sell quality wine at Füred and at
Kaposvár
Drink my good pal, I'm giving it to you without stint9
Live long
You have to hit the iron
While it's flaming hot
A barrel that is empty
Is worth nothing
So you need to fill it
And then you need to take from it
When necessary

  • 1. This wasn't meant to make a lot of sense, Hungarian folk songs often have parts like this, I think because singing was partly about leaving behind your rational mind and using words and making sounds you normally wouldn't.
  • 2. The river is the Danube.
  • 3. A bag with a single shoulder strap.
  • 4. In the sense of "playful in a naughty or teasing way".
  • 5. The biggest lake in Hungary.
  • 6. An archaic unit of measurement used for measuring crops.
  • 7. A mountainous region in Transdanubia, Hungary.
  • 8. A cockerel (rooster) that has been castrated or neutered, either physically or chemically, to improve the quality of its flesh for food.
  • 9. Generously or liberally.

دیدگاه نویسنده:

This song is a mashup of four old Hungarian folk songs.
The title (ihaj csuhaj) implies excessive merrymaking, revelry.
