Mom

I miss your (caresses) 1
The winter has arrived, and a blizzard rages outside the window.
I dial and say, "Well, hi mom."
I still haven't found anyone who loves me like you do.

I'm so wrapped up in my own life, my life is my work, so I didn't call.
Of course, no girl could ever replace you.
I'm a street poet and romantic.
I don't trust anyone, and my heart's as cold as the Arctic.

But (in my heart) it's always Springtime for you there
With aromatic gardens in full bloom.
I've driven away the night from there, driven away all bad things,
driven away everything from there, except for your love.

And, I kiss your hands, mom.
Although I can be stubborn at times.
You'll have to excuse these tears, mom.
I promise that soon I'll mend my ways. 2

I miss your (caresses).
The winter has arrived, and a blizzard rages outside the window.
I dial and say, "Well, hi mom."
I still haven't found anyone who loves me like you do.

I miss your (caresses).
The winter has arrived, and a blizzard rages outside the window.
I dial and say, "Well, hi mom."
I still haven't found anyone who loves me like you do.

Mom, I'm sorry that I didn't turn out the way you'd hoped I would.
Every time I see you I kiss your hands.
Mom, forgive me, I realize 3 how much of an ass I've been.
Well, I finally understand that no one will love me like you do.

Mom, forgive me that I so seldom call you.
I threw myself into my work, and forgot about everything important.
Mom, I'm sorry that I so love to be alone,
but it's frightening to think what this world would be like without you.

Mom, I know that you can and will forgive me.
Even though other people won't.
I'm some place where I fell out of touch, but you're the one who can't get to sleep.
How you love, mom, how you love me like no one else.

I miss your (caresses).
The winter has arrived, and a blizzard rages outside the window.
I dial and say, "Well, hi mom."
I still haven't found anyone who loves me like you do.

My native Russian opinion - it is not a weird song. Son sings to his mother emotionally, expressing his love. He is not ‘mama’s boy’, he just loves his mom, I personally do not understand why one would not understand it :)
And she has not necessarily died...
Very sweet song

Just few remarks about your translation:
цветущие сады -> gardens/orchards in bloom

And, that every time you would meet (some man) I would kiss your hand — original — И каждый раз при встрече я целую твои руки
==> there’s no ‘some man’, every time he sees his mother, he kisses her hands

I apologize for calling the song "weird", I will retract that comment. From the American view, almost all rap music is vulgar, so to me it was "weird" to hear a rap song that was sweet. So I meant no offense. As for calling him a "momma's boy", that unfortunately is a term in English, for a man who still loves his mother very much, and it is not offensive, except to "macho men" who do not have any respect for women (even their own mother).
As for me thinking she had died, I got that from the line, "and you will never sleep again." (I thought that was poetic Russian for someone having died.)

NP at all. Fn #4 means that at some point he was depressed, out of contact with other people, it’s Russian idiom “уйти в себя”

Oh, that's what it means. LOL. I had no idea. I thought maybe it was like Я с ума со шёл but that didn't make sense. So, thanks for clearing that up for me. Hugs.

So уйти в себя means "to fall out of touch". Thanks! Perhaps you should make it an idiom.

It's the same in English, so you can imagine how confused I was. LOL.

And you again can't sleep. " just flown south"? The winter has arrived, and only blizzard outside the window. Although, sometimes I can be stubborn for you.

Thank you for your corrections! I will update.
Mostly I need help understanding the one sentence that makes no sense in English. Can you help me there?

sandringsandring    Sam, 10/11/2018 - 09:04

That's not a weird song at all. Mary is right, it's a wonderful song full of love towards his mother who is not dead, I assure you, she waits patiently for her dear son to call her and say he's all right. Phil, do (did) you often call your mother? What do (did) you say when you call(ed)? - Mom, I'm fine. I'm sorry, I'm busy right now. I'll call you back. Do you ever call back? And she waits....

Suggestions:
1. I miss your hands
2. The winter has arrived and there's only blizzard outside
I dial your number "Well, hi, mom."
3. Girls? They'll never replace you
4. I don't trust anyone, and my heart's as cold as the Arctic.
But for you, there's always springtime in it
With fragrant gardens in bloom
5. Although you may think me stubborn at times
6. Mom, I'm sorry if I've behaved not the way I should have
And, every time I meet you I kiss your hands
Mom, forgive me, I realize how much of an ass I've been.
Well, I finally understand that no one will love me like you do.
7. And at some point, I got short-circuited on myself again
And again you're awake

There are very good finds in your translation. I've given my suggestions to explain the meaning rather than prompt the wording which is up to you, Phil. Good luck! :)

Thank you for your comments and the comments of others, I will update with all of your corrections. I thank you for your (1,2,3...) help. However, I purposefully made these changes because some of these things make no sense in English. For example "Mom, I miss your hands." This makes no sense in English, because it sounds as if his mother had her hands removed (as if they were amputated), so I changed it to "I miss your caresses." which make sense. Sometimes simple changes like these are necessary so it makes sense in the other language. In fact, reading this song literally in English is a little creepy. It seems his mother has lost her hands, and will never go to sleep again. For these and other reasons I thought she was dead. My mistake, I will correct. Thank you!

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I really thought I translated that sentence right. LOL. Of course, I got it wrong. I'll correct it.

It's heartwarming to see such a good translation and a friendly comments section in what must have been the most heartfelt song I have ever heard.
Just a few small suggestions -
I feel the line "Ты прости меня за эти слезы, мама" could be better translated as "Forgive me for these tears, mama". It sounds just that bit more poetic to me.
And maybe the line "Я где-то там ушел в себя, а ты опять не спишь" could be put more concisely as "I walled myself up somewhere, and again you won't fall asleep"
Thanks for sharing! Спасибо большое)

Thank you. Both of your suggestions are good. However, I only used "excuse these tears" to give a little variety and not repeat "forgive me" so many times. In English, "excuse these tears" is very similar to "forgive me for crying". As for your second suggestion, I speak American English, and although "walling oneself up" may mean something in England, it has no meaning in the USA. Here, we would understand, "I walled up my tears", but not "I walled up myself", so unfortunately, as much as I appreciate your second suggestion, I'm not British, and it sounds awkward to me, so I will leave my translation as it is. But, I thank you for your suggestions. Hugs.
