We're here

We're here, we're here.
We're plumes of smoke, we are tongues of fire.
We're here, we're here, we're here.

We're nearby, nearby, we heat up your fingers,
And the logs are cracking as we hug them tightly.

A song we're singing in sync with each other.
If you want, we'll burn all the ice stars in heaven.
If you want, we'll burn whatever you request.
We'll burn enemies to get them out of your way.

We'll make ash and cover all the sky that weighs your
Head down, that has got a brilliant brain inside it.
We'll destroy for good the roads that run so vainly
Through your home land, through the fascinating planet.

Soon you'll shine as brightly as we shine together.
All those icy mountains we will turn to ashes.
All those icy mountains, all those icy boulders.
All the useless things that are so faith destroying.

There are no more trees and there are no more lakes.
There is nothing left but only pyre flames.

fire -> pyre (fits better here)
logs crackes in our embraces -> the logs crack as we embrace them
We're all so synchronously sing the song, the song. -> A song we're all singing so synchronously.
on the heaven -> in heaven (?)
to get out them of your way -> to get them out of your way
We'll enshrouds -> We'll enshroud
And suppress -> And suppresses (Suppressing ?)
giantly -> giantlike
prevent faith -> destroy faith

Боже, сколько ошибок, включая совсем детские.

>pyre - погребальный костер. В точку, но мне кажется, слишком прямолинейно использовать здесь это слово, тем более в начале песни.

>And suppress -> And suppresses (Suppressing ?)
Совсем плохо становится с ритмом в этой строке. И до этого было не очень. Я еще подумаю.

Спасибо огромное!

>And suppress -> And suppresses (Suppressing ?)
"presses your lucid mind and a heart of gold" - мне кажется, так точнее

Все-таки решил использовать pyre, он сработает как ключ ко всей песне.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Lun, 08/04/2019 - 08:08

Personally, I don't have any problems with the word "pyre". But, a LOT of Americans do NOT know this old word. "fire" is much more common.

And the logs crack as we embrace them, in our arms. > (Although this may actually be what they sing in the song, it sounds very weird in English!!! Why would anyone hold a burning log?! Are you Russians sure this is what it means? Is there some idiomatic expression this is trying to convey? Even though the words are understood in English, it's just so stupid. Seriously! Why would anyone hold burning logs in their hands until they crack???!!!)

so synchronously > (Maybe this is an actual word, but I've never heard it. If I wanted to make up this word I would say "synchoniciously" (which is not a word!!! But!!! Even though it's wrong, people would understand what I meant to say. Fact.) and even if this is a word, no one says it. And, I have no idea (as a fluent English speaker) how to pronounce it. So my suggestion is to use) = "in sync" or "all together" or "as one".

We'll enshroud with ash the sky that puts the pressure, > We'll enshroud the sky with ash. ( "...your lucid mind and heart of gold." (Sorry, but English has word order. :/ )

the roads that run for nothing > the roads that run uselessly

Icy mountains, the same way as icy boulders, > Icy mountains, the same as icy boulders. (Sorry. Makes no sense "the same WAY as...")
(If you meant so say "We'll crush the mountains (so easily), like they were just boulders." This does NOT get that meaning across.

I suggest instead:
We'll turn to dust all the giantlike icy mountains, > We'll turn giant icy mountains into dust,... (common word order)
(OR) > We'll turn to dust the giant icy mountains... (old poetic (fucked up) word order. LOL :) )
(AND)
Icy mountains, the same way as icy boulders, > ...just as if they were icy boulders.

No any more trees, no any more lakes, no any more > No more trees. No more lakes. Not anymore.

About word order > I would like to say that in poems, English word order can be modified. But, it needs to be used in such a way as old poetry prescribes, which is very similar to German (where verbs are put to the end of a phrase), or things are put out of place, and commas are used to separate misplaced parts. It's very tricky. Just be sure the meaning is in tack. :)

But not "Come on baby, light my pyre"! It should be very cheerful song!

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Lun, 08/04/2019 - 23:47

Well, I'm OLD, but I'm not old enough to remember the DOORS. My friend (ten years older than I am) knows all their songs, but because he's so old, he can't remember the lyrics. Soooo... IMHO the answer to your question is: Young people probably don't know it. I'm not a DOORS fan, and those old enough to remember are going senile, so they've forgotten it. LMAO.
Oh, and I was from San Diego, so cut me some slack about all West Coast natives being DOORS fans. :)
BTW, I've already explained that I can't remember the song lyrics, so when in "Come On Baby Light My Fire" does he sing "pyre"?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
One last thing, "C'mon c'mon c'mon and touch me baby....'til the stars fall from the sky, for you and I" is grammatically incorrect. :/

Thank you, Phil!

>But, a LOT of Americans do NOT know this old word. "fire" is much more common.
Let they look in the dictionary.

>And the logs crack as we embrace them, in our arms.
The "tongues of the pyre" say it, not a man.

>so synchronously
Russians like this word. They sing together and sing in time in chorus. "In sync as one" - very good!

>We'll enshroud the sky with ash
We'll enshroud not just the sky, but the sky that put the pressure...

"We'll enshroud the sky that puts the pressure, // presses your lucid mind and a heart of gold with ash"?

BratBrat    Lun, 08/04/2019 - 18:27

Я вот тут прислушался - Саша поет "Мы так синхронно распеваем песню", так что отредактируйте исходный текст. И в переводе нужно будет убрать "all" -> A song we're singing in sync with each other
И если уж указывать в сносках дифтонгизацию, то добавьте сноски к "твою-у" и "земле-э".
tongues of the pyre - такая конструкция непонятна носителям языка, чаще всего говорят "tongues of fire/flame", тут Фил прав, а pyre лучше оставить в конце песни.
Лучше строчку переделайте в We're plumes of smoke, we are tongues of fire
We'll enshroud with ash the sky that puts the pressure -> We'll throw (toss) up ash to the sky that puts the pressure (?)
presses your lucid mind and a heart of gold. -> подумайте ещё над этой строчкой, а то она ни в какие ворота не лезет, даю подсказку: в английском языке существует идиома "mind like a steel trap", означающая "светлую голову" - может быть, её стоит использовать в этой длинной строке.
the roads that run uselessly -> the roads that run to nowhere (will fit the proper stressing)
Through your home land, through the beautiful planet. - Одного слога не хватает в этой строке, и мне что-то автоматически в голову лезет planeta, - смешная чепуха. Добавьте один слог - и всё будет нормально -> through the prepossessing planet
You'll shine the same way soon. You'll shine the same way soon. -> А почему бы просто не написать Soon you'll shine as bright as we are shining now - и смысл сохранится, и размер.
We'll turn giant icy mountains into dust -> All those icy mountains we will turn to ashes
Icy mountains and as well as icy boulders, -> All those icy mountains, all those icy boulders
All the things that are so useless and destroy faith. -> All the useless things that are so faith destroying.
No more trees. No more likes. Not anymore, anyway. -> There are no more trees and there are no more lakes
There is nothing at all, only the fire burns. -> There is nothing left but only pyre flames

Ну, теперь можно петь?

>И если уж указывать в сносках дифтонгизацию, то добавьте сноски к "твою-у" и "земле-э".
Я сделал сноски только там, где меняется количество или ударение на слоги внутри слова, а тут этого нет

>Фил прав, а pyre лучше оставить в конце песни.
Мне кажется, Фил говорил не совсем об этом. Но хорошо, давайте так сделаем.

>Лучше строчку переделайте в We're plumes of smoke, we are tongues of fire
Плюмажи дыма? Но "columns of smoke" вполне почтенное выражение: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/example/english/column-of-smoke
Плюмаж - слишком слабое слово для всепожирающего огня.

>We'll throw (toss) up ash to the sky that puts the pressure
Но мы же не просто бросаем в небо пепел, мы этим пеплом затянем все небо, нужно что-то посильнее
Может быть
We'll close the sky with ash, sky that puts the pressure?

Lucid mind есть, например, вот здесь: https://www.lucid-mind-center.com/lucid-mind.html
Есть еще light mind, bright mind

>the roads that run to nowhere
Подходит отлично, но смысл не тот. Ведь дороги все куда-то ведут, но имеется в виду, что туда лучше не ехать.

>Through your home land, through the beautiful planet
А мне кажется, всего хватает - по 11 слогов.

>Soon you'll shine as bright as we are shining now - и смысл сохранится, и размер.
Класс, не догадался! Не хватает одного слога, но можно написать
Soon you'll shine as brighly as we shine together, в ритм попадаем.

Концовка в Вашей редакции восхитительна!

>There is nothing left but only pyre flames
Одного слога не хватает, в pyre вроде один слог, но звучит как два - "пая".
Или написать ...the pyre flames?

Pinhas Zelenogorsky ha scritto:

Фил уже ответил, что так не проканает, но вот я подкину такой вариант:
We'll make ash to bury deep the sky that's weighing
Down you head that's having a sharp mind inside it

Pinhas Zelenogorsky ha scritto:

Ну тогда можно использовать почти буквальный перевод: the roads that run so vainly

А в оригинале - 12! Помните, "земле-э" добавляет лишний слог.

Неплохо, только исправьте опечатку - brightly

Слово pyre, так же как и fire имеет в составе трифтонг. В зависимости от требований метра оно может подвергаться диерезису и легко распадаться на два, и даже на три слога (когда уж очень надо). Так что тут проблемы нет никакой.

И вот ещё:

We're nearby, nearby, we warm your hands, you legs, -> We're nearby, nearby, we heat up your fingers
And the logs crack as we embrace them, in our arms. -> And the logs are cracking as we hug them tightly.

BratBrat    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 18:39

PinchusPinchus
   Mar, 09/04/2019 - 20:55

BratBrat    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 18:43

We'll enshroud with ash the sky that puts the pressure,
presses your lucid mind and a heart of gold.

My best suggestion is this:
"We'll enshroud the sky with ash.
The sky that stresses (or "presses" or "pressures") your lucid mind and heart of gold."

Sorry, but you really do have to make this two sentences in English, unless you want to write something very poetic.

My attempt at a very poetic version is something like this, which requires you to completely fuck up English word order, AND change the order of these two Russian sentences:

"Your lucid mind and heart of gold weighed down,
by the pressures of the sky, that with ash, we'll shroud."

It takes a while for a modern English speaker to decipher it, but it (poetically) is correct. Still, it's a very weird sentence, albeit poetic.

PinchusPinchus
   Lun, 08/04/2019 - 23:11

Oh, I see!
I've just suggested "We'll close the sky with ash, sky that puts the pressure..." above. Is it admissible?
And what about "lucid mind"? Brat told about it "ни в какие ворота не лезет"

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Lun, 08/04/2019 - 23:19

As you well know Pinhas, I'm an American, so I can't say how to correctly translate Russian meaning into English. Brat too is a Russian, so you should probably go with his interpretation of the translation.

As for "We'll close the sky with ash, sky that puts the pressure..." Sorry. NO!
If anything, you could say "We'll COVER the sky with ash, the sky that pressures...
...your lucid mind and heart of gold."
You have to say "sky" twice, or it would be the ash that is pressuring your lucid mind.
A problem with not having cases, but using word order. LOL
Oh! Our languages are so mean to each other. ;)

Ok! I think, "lucid mind" is just about smart person, clever person with

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 03:15

No. A "lucid mind" is simply a mind that is very awake. "A mind that thinks very clearly." It's the opposite of a mind that is thinking as though it is asleep.
"A sharp mind" is a clever person. Of course, we have a lot of different adjectives for smart people.

"Lucid" is often used by intelligent people (often sarcastically) to mean "awake".
EX: In the morning your boss asks you "How are you doing?"
You look at him with bloodshot eyes and say, "I'm lucid."

It's NOT the same as "lucidity". That word is very uncommon. Many people don't know what it means, and will have to look it up in a dictionary.

PinchusPinchus
   Mar, 09/04/2019 - 03:18

I think, "lucid mind" is ok. "steel trap" (as Brat proposed) sounds too cool. Sharp mind is also ok, but we need 2 syllable word, stressed on first.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 04:17

"His (Her/Our/My/etc.) mind is like a steel trap." is a saying, and that's really the only way I can think of to say it. And it means that you don't forget anything. It has the same meaning as the saying "He (She) has the memory of an elephant." Or "I (We/You/They) have the memory of an elephant." (Supposedly, elephants don't ever forget anything in our folklore.) Is that what you mean to say?
Lucid mind (лу-сйэд-майндь) is 3 syllables.

Did Brat propose "steel-trap mind". That can also work. People can understand that.

Just a difference in meaning.
"Lucid mind" = thinking when you are not tired, very awake, very clear thoughts, (but person can be as dumb as a bag of rocks).
"steel-trap mind" = a reference to a brain. It's not necessarily about "thinking" at all, but the brain never forgets anything. (Person can be stupid too. Just because he remembers everything doesn't make him intelligent.)

The choice is yours.

PinchusPinchus
   Mar, 09/04/2019 - 09:49

"светлая голова" describes permanent state of mind, and not about memory. So, "sharp mind" is the best choice, but we need the 2 syllables word (first stressd) in place of "sharp"

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 23:39

May I offer a suggestion? It's NOT necessary to make EVERY word have the same meaning with the same stress with the same syllable count. You have six syllables to get the meaning across, and you know where the stress needs to be. So, may I suggest that instead of searching, unsuccessfully, to find an English word with the same stress and syllable count for светлая and for голова. Just use the whole thing together. (STRESS-blah-blah, blah-blah-STRESS) with a meaning of "intelligent mind". A suggestion that's not so strict:

"bright minded thoughts (abound)"
You can use any useless 2 syllable word for (abound). Suggestions, "around", "inside", etc.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mar, 09/04/2019 - 23:44

Lastly, GT gives a horrible translation for "светлая голова". It says, "light head". That's just awful!
I have a light head. This means, "I'm dizzy." It's more commonly said, "I'm light-headed." (I'm dizzy.)
This is NOT the same as "светлая голова" which I guess is more like "bright mind". ("Smart brain".)

"pyre" - английскими буквами, "руге" - русскими, но ничего не значит. Однако, при желании, могу набрать, скажем

XBOCT OCETPA (tale of sturgeon) with english letters. So, my good friend Margaret (Rita) wears a cap with inscription "Puma" and tells it's Рита.

I like it very much!!! Just two problems left, sorry.

We'll make ash AND THICKLY COVER the sky that weighS
youR HEAD DOWN, THAT HAS A BRILLIANT BRAIN INSIDE IT
.
through the (prepossessing?) planet.

This misses the syllable count and I don't know what prepossessing is trying to mean here. In fact to prepossess something is a very weird verb. I can imagine a useage for it. You're about to buy a car, you haven't paid for it yet, but you are driving it. You "possess" it, because you drive it. But, you dont' "possess" it yet, the bank still owns it. Here, I am really confused as to what you're trying to say. Perhaps this is very poetic in Russian. It's confusing in English. I'd make it simpler...

"through this beautiful planet."

PinchusPinchus
   Mer, 10/04/2019 - 03:42

May be "admirable" or "fascinating" planet (tanks to rhymezone.com)?

> You're about to buy a car, you haven't paid for it yet, but you are driving it.
Like we use the Earth!

>We'll make ash AND THICKLY COVER the sky that weighS
youR HEAD DOWN, THAT HAS A BRILLIANT BRAIN INSIDE IT

I like it. It seems rhythmically identical and singable (the only difference I see is that in Brat's version the last syllable in the first line is unstressed like in Russian text)

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 05:19

I understand the poetic nature of some things you say in Russian. "Prepossessing", as I have explained, is NOT a verb we use. If you say it, people have to stop and try to think about what you are trying to say. As I explained, the ONLY way I could make sense of this verb that you have created, would be something like car ownership. However, the idea that we live on the Earth and we're ruining is NOT understood by "prepossession", mainly because we will NEVER own the Earth. The Earth itself cannot be bought or sold. So, I understand what you're trying to say, but it's really NOT understood with "prepossessing". I think most people will think it's a typo for "preposition", which also makes no sense. So, I strongly suggest you change this word. Sorry.

BratBrat    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 13:33

C'mon, Phil, "prepossessing" ain't a verb, 'tis an adjective meaning "attractive". I've got a bout of laughter though I agree that this word is not of the front row, of course. As for me, I've met a couple of native Russians who didn't make proper sense out of the word "отменный", so they would have probably translated the sentence «"Спартак" отыграл отменный матч» as «"Spartak" has played the postponed match». LOL
BTW, Pinhas said that "руге" makes no sense, but it's the dative of "руга" which meant a priest's salary not too many centuries ago. ;)
Well, first I wanted to write down "a picture-perfect earth" but then changed my mind towards something not that banal.
But now it looks like this "picture-perfect" would have been a picture-perfect choice. :)
And the other lines could be like this, I think:
We'll make ash and cover all the sky that weighs your
Head down, that has got a brilliant brain inside it

Sounds great to me. Much better than Spartacus. LOL

Ok. Phil, and what are you thinking about "admirable" or "fascinating"?

Ну вот, я оставил священников без зарплаты.

>picture-perfect
Нинка, как картинка, с фраером гребет.

Что-то мне это словечко не в жилу в этом контексте.

BratBrat    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 14:53

And what about "drop-dead gorgeous"?

BratBrat    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 15:11

А по количеству слогов это слово никак не подходит. :(

4 слога, ударение на первом. Все как у prepossessing

BratBrat    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 17:58

Это вы имеете в виду староанглийский вариант произношения - ˈadmərəbəl, но Фил не согласится, так как в американском варианте это слово имеет 3 слога - ˈædmərəbl. ;)

Не совсем. Американцы произносят это слово в два слога ˈpeɪv-mənt, а британцы могут сократить и до одного - ˈpeɪvmnt, причем m также практически редуцируется до нуля.

BratBrat    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 18:29

Well, 'fascinating' does sound better, but I'm afraid Phil won't recommend it.

Phil AmbroPhil Ambro    Mer, 10/04/2019 - 19:05

fascinating planet. sounds good.
picture-perfect. sounds good. (Not "banal" at all.)

Thank you! So, fascinating is our winner!
