Yup, that's an idiom. Wiktionary says that the French synonymous variants are "à bon chat bon rat" and "à trompeur trompeur et demi" whatever these may mean. :)
"All that is hidden" really sounds better, I'll fix that. As for "to protect", the direct translation of it is "защищать", it's quite a different context for a native speaker. "To keep/to treasure" seems a little bit closer for me; both can be translated as "хранить".
The only French words and phrases I know are quotes from "War and Peace", anyway. :bigsmile: Some perfectly Russian characters are addressed with the French variants of their names, sometimes it makes you giggle. Almost nobody calls Count Pierre "Пётр", yet with a surname like "Безухов" that's so odd. Or, for example, Жюли Карагина.
"Охрана" equals "security" or "guards", that's right. "To treasure" just sounds more passionate to me. I guess, a curious reader will pay attention to our commentaries here.
