Because of the hairs, eyebrows and eyes (of the beloved) I have my head in the clouds

- 1. The lyrics belong to Babur who was an emperor-poet (16th century). He was of Chagatai Turkic origin. Translating the poem is exteremely difficult because of multi-layered stylistic devices. There is meter (aruz), there is rhyme and there are all kinds of figures of speech and sound techniques which all affects the choice of word. Every couplet has a theme and gathers related terms together e.g. if the theme is China then the couplet gathers the terms related to China. The classical Persian-Turkic divan poetry used some strict motifs and beauty standards (black doe-like eyes etc.). The beloved is always genderless which makes it harder to translate pronouns into English. The beloved is portrayed as a merciless warrior or hunter who injures the lover using his/her glances like an arrow etc., but the lover who is helpless before the beloved (even he is an emperor), takes these arrows as a favor as any attention of the beloved is wellcome.
- 2. It means the arrow goes astray. x reads not iks but kh, a guttural h. khatâ rhymes with khitâ in the next couplet
- 3. not that eyes of does/deers of China are different but because the theme of the couplet is China. Also, consonant repetition with chyn "true" and Chin "China" (also chin means chin which is not meant but reminded) and musk, musk deers and China are related
- 4. Hat 'line, calligraphy' is related with musk in the sense of color as musk is black like ink. Consonant repetition with hat, hata and Hıta. Hıta was a land in nothern of China where Turkic and Mongol peoples lived, who were excellent archers. Hıta was also where musk deers lived, so they exported musk which was very precious.
