Hey everyone,

I live in New Zealand but my Mum and her side of the family are Croatian/Yugoslavian. I have some tattoos on my arm and am getting a few more in a week or so and i would like a quote on there that is in or has something to do with Croatia! You may say well why don't you ask your family! I would but i want it to be a surprise but i have to get it right!! :) :)

So does anyone know any famous historical Croatian/Yugoslavian quotes? Could you write them up in Croatian and there translation to English please?

And if possible could you translate the following to Croatian and let me know if they still make sense? THank you so much.

For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity. -William Penn

Desire for success should be greater than fear of failure. -Bill Cosby

Maybe:

For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.
(Jer) Smrt nije ništa drugo do naše skretanje s vrijemena ka vječnosti.

The only way past fear is through it.
Jedini način da se pobjedi (prevaziđe) strah je suočavanje sa njim.

Hello. I am from Croatia, so...

she flies by her own wings - Ona leti svojim vlastitim krilima

learn from yesterday - uči od jučer (literary translated, but we have one saying here it says "uči iz prošlosti" (learn from the past....or, also similar "uči iz vlastitih grešaka" (learn from your own mistakes)

live for today - živi za danas

create your own future - stvori svoju vlastitu budućnost

be the artist that designs your own future - budi umjetnik koji kreira svoju vlastitu budućnost (also, we have something similar in croatian. We say: "budi tvorac svoje sreće" - be the creator of your own happiness...or: "ti si tvorac svoje sreće" - you are the creator of your own happiness

I hope I helped you a little :
greetings from Croatia :)

I would advise anyone thinking of getting a tattoo in a language they don't speak, such as Croatian in this case, to serious consider using the versions proposed by native speakers, instead of literal translations of the sayings you are asking for. Marinelie proposed some very good Croatian equivalents, sayings that express the same idea as the ones that you are asking for, but which are phrased differently. I do think the last saying is most commonly expressed as "svatko je tvorac svoje sreće" (everyone is the creator of their own happiness) and would probably look better as a tattoo in this form. It really sounds much better to use the versions of sayings that are actually used in Croatia, and more native speakers will quickly understand the idea you are trying to convey.

Definitely agree with Johnny Appleseed here. In a lot of languages it's hard to translate popular English phrases literally, or sometimes they just don't have the same meaning/impact in the language. Get a native speaker of the language in question to have a look and give you a phrase native to that language that expresses a similar sentiment, and above all, avoid the temptation of looking up the words in a dictionary and stringing them together!

After all, nobody wants to be the Slavic equivalent of a Hanzi Smatter victim. :)

Oh, and Miss Suffle, that poem is beautiful :)

Seas are overrated. I need only look at the British seaside to say that ;)

The name may stay the same, but some need to be transliterated, especially if a sound in the name doesn't exist. And some have equivalents in that language...

Not at all, I'm sure it's lovely and I hear lots of great things about it. Though I haven't been there myself yet, I would love to go.

Just that in a general sense, having a seaside is pointless if you're not fortunate enough (British isles mostly falls into this category here) to have a climate which lets you make good use of it. Though I respect the poor souls who try to make use of the British seaside in all weathers ;)

Dream your dreams big - Sanjaj velike snove
Believing is everything - U vjeri je sve
or
Uzdaj se u vjeru
This should work, but in Croatia we don't have such phrases.

I need someone to translate this into Croatian also! "Live devotedly" if it's not possible to translate it without sounding weird because Croatians don't have such a saying, can someone please give me alternative ideas? I am looking for a tattoo quote that honours the Croatian half of my family, devoting it to them or anything else that is meaningful in my life.
