Chico Buarque - A Banda (traduction en anglais)

portugais

A Banda

Estava à toa na vida
O meu amor me chamou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

A minha gente sofrida
Despediu-se da dor
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

O homem sério que contava dinheiro parou
O faroleiro que contava vantagem parou
A namorada que contava as estrelas parou
Para ver, ouvir e dar passagem

A moça triste que vivia calada sorriu
A rosa triste que vivia fechada se abriu
E a meninada toda se assanhou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

Estava à toa na vida
O meu amor me chamou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

A minha gente sofrida
Despediu-se da dor
Pra ver a banda passar

The Band

Versions : #1#2
I was there just chilling
When babe called me
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

My suffering people
Said bye to the pain
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

The serious man that counted money stopped
The lighthouse keeper that bounced stopped
The girlfriend that counted stars stopped
To see, hear and let them pass by

The sad girl that never speaked smiled
The sad rose that was closed opened
And all the kids cheered
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

I was there just chilling
When babe called me
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

My suffering people
Said bye to the pain
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

The old man forgot he was sick and tought
He was a young boy to leave the bed so he danced
The ugly girl looked over in the window
Thinking the band was there because of her

The march of joy spread in the avenue and insisted
The full moon that was hidden appeared
My whole city was adorned
To see the band passing by
Singing some love words

But for my sadness
What was sweet ended
Everything took its own place
After the band was gone

Everybody in their corner
Every corner with its pain
After the band was gone
Singing some love words
After the band was gone
Singing some love words

Commentaires de l’auteur(e) :

The author was exiled of country after releasing this song. Brazil was in the military dictatorial government at this time, and every song had to pass though the process that decided if the song was "safe" or not for the government. This song represents that when the military band passed everyone stopped to see, but because they were afraid, not because they tought it was pretty like the song says, building a ironic relation.
