The block has been implemented some years ago, because many people were abusing of the rating system. Some users, who were particularly close, frequently gave 5 stars to each other to show their appreciation. Besides this, many people mistook stars for thank you's and all this gave rise to a horde of poor quality translations being awarded 5 stars for no reason.
The admins concluded it didn't make much sense for a user to rate a translation from/ to a language they don't even speak. It's not really "voting suppression", it's just a compromise to keep things running smoothly. When people go against common sense, the admins need to keep things in check and implement this kind of blocks. At the end of the day, we learn from our mistakes.
Come on Joshua, I was just kidding ;-) I was also "inspired" by the absurd objections that exist in this country against a common-sense idea
of requiring an ID for voting. I can appreciate the attempts to make the system more objective and understand that it is almost a "mission impossible". If I really cared about this block I could have easily edited my profile to add German as a studied language, which would have been
(almost) true...But I decided that for now, it would be enough to let Vera know that she has my "informal" vote.
No sweat, buddy. I have no doubt that you are one of the fairest people around as well as most knowledgeable. I still have some mirto left so I'll drink it to you tonight. Can't wait for the Covid thing to pass so I can travel to Europe again. And maybe Sardinia/Corsica - never been there...
Hi Joshua, ok, it's not the right place to discuss it and the rule is good, of course, but I have to admit that I - sorry to say so - not always give 5 stars for a really excellent translation. In the beginning I did this rating only for translations into my own language, because there I can understand every detail. Now I am rating also English and even Russian or Spanish songs or poems, although I am not fluent. Generally I am not a friend of evaluation, I am not a school-teacher, no judge, and really don't want to tell other people what is "good" or "bad". There should be 2 reasons to rate, first, to attract an unknown reader to a very good translation, and second, to motivate the friends here to keep on. I for myself prefer the latter reason. But that indeed can open the door for abuse then... To be honest, Joshua, as far as I am concerned, you can abolish this "rating"-system - it is never fair, but always "selection".
