Nienawiść

Spójrzcie, jaka wciąż sprawna,
jak dobrze się trzyma
w naszym stuleciu nienawiść
Jak lekko bierze wysokie przeszkody,
Jakie to łatwe dla niej - skoczyć, dopaść.

Nie jest jak inne uczucia.
Starsza i młodsza od nich równocześnie.
Sama rodzi przyczyny,
które ją budzą do życia.
Jeśli zasypia, to nigdy snem wiecznym.
Bezsenność nie odbiera jej sił, ale dodaje.

Religia nie religia
byle przyklęknąć na starcie.
Ojczyzna nie ojczyzna -
byle się zerwać do biegu.
Niezła i sprawiedliwość na początek.
Potem już pędzi sama.
Nienawiść. Nienawiść.
Twarz jej wykrzywia grymas
ekstazy miłosnej.

Ach, te inne uczucia -
cherlawe i ślamazarne.
Od kiedy to braterstwo
może liczyć na tłumy?
Współczucie czy kiedykolwiek
pierwsze dobiło do mety?
Zwątpienie ilu chętnych porywa za sobą?
Porywa tylko ona, które swoje wie.

Zdolna, pojętna, bardzo pracowita.
Czy trzeba mówić ile ułożyla pieśni.
Ile stronic historii ponumerowała.
Ile dywanów z ludzi porozpościerała
na ilu placach, stadionach.

Nie okłamujmy się:
potrafi tworzyć piękno.
Wspaniałe są jej łuny czarną nocą.
Świetne kłęby wybuchów o różanym świcie.
Trudno odmówić patosu ruinom
i rubasznego humoru
krzepko sterczącej nad nimi kolumnie.

Jest mistrzynią kontrastu
miedzy łoskotem a ciszą,
miedzy czerwoną krwią a białym śniegem.
A nade wszystko nigdy jej nie nudzi
motyw schludnego oprawcy
nad splugawioną ofiarą.

Do nowych zadań w każdej chwili gotowa.
Jeżeli musi poczekać, poczeka.
Mowią że ślepa. Ślepa?
Ma bystre oczy snajpera
i śmiało patrzy na przyszłość
- ona jedna.

Hatred

Look, how still fit,
In what good shape still is
Hatred, in our century.*
How effortlessly she conquers high obstacles.
How easy it is for her – to jump, to catch [after a chase].

She’s not like the other feelings.
Older and younger than them at the same time.
She herself gives birth to the reasons that wake her up to life.
If she falls to sleep, her slumber is never eternal.

Religion, no religion –
Only to genuflect at the start.
Fartherland, no fatherland –
Only to spring up and run.
Even justice will do for the start.
Afterwards she races by herself.
Hatred. Hatred.
Her face is convulsed with the grimace
Of love ecstasy.

Ah, those other feelings –
Frail and sluggish.
Since when the fraternity
Can count on [drawing cheering] crowds?
Was the compassion ever
The first one to reach the finish line [as a ship reaches the port]?
How many people are captivated by the doubt?
It’s only her who captivates, [as] she’s adamant in her convictions.

She’s gifted, a quick learner, very laborious.
Do I have to mention how many anthems did she compose.
How many pages of history did she number.
How many carpets of people did she spread
On how many squares and stadiums.

Let’s not deceive ourselves:
[Indeed,] she’s able to create beauty.
Magnificent are her fire glows at the dead of the night.
Splendid [are her] round clouds of the [smoke of the] explosions at the rosy dawn.
And it’s hard to deny the pathos to the ruins
And the earthy [sense of] humour
To the column firmly protruding above them.

She’s the mistress of contrast
Between the clangor and the silence,
Between the red blood and the white snow.
And, above all, she’ll never get bored
With the motif of a neat torturer
Above [his] defiled victim.

[She’s] ever ready for new tasks.
If she has to wait, she will.
They say she’s blind. Blind?
She has sharp sniper’s eyes
And looks into the future with no fear
– only she does.
