Music: Alexander Olshanetsky
The song was dedicated to the singer Isa Kremer born in Bălți (Бэлць), a city that is now in Moldova, but was then within the borders of the Russian Empire. Later the city named in the title was often misidentified with a Ukrainian country called Belz (Белз). After the premier of the operetta "Dos lid fun jet" in 1932 in New York, of which the song was a part, the song became very popular all over the world and already in 1935 the Polish version interpreted by the singer Adam Aston was released in Poland. Olshanetsky's melody at the end of the Second World War inspired Ludwik Starski to write the words of Warszawo ma (my Warsaw) for a musical film, the first post-war Polish feature film "Zakazane piosenki", a song that is still part of the repertoire of many Polish artists and continues to be very much felt and appreciated, especially by the inhabitants of the capital. Then there is another Polish text, written by Agnieszka Osiecka, which takes up the notes of the "Mayn Shtetele Belz" and together with the infinite interpretations of the original in Yiddish both in Poland and in other countries of the world makes this song, which in the intention of the authors wanted to express a simple feeling of nostalgia for the hometown, a song-symbol of regret and pain for a whole reality of the little "shtetl" swept away by the war.
The singer in the video is not Isa Kremer and she is singing a slightly different version of the song...
