Musetto

[Fischio]

La più bella sei tu-u, il tuo nome è Lilì-ì.
Spettinata così-ì, tu mi piaci di più…

Oh no!

Oh no! Cara, resta sempre così (mia),
col musetto pulito, col tuo nome Lilì-ì.
La più bella sei tu-u, spettinata così-ì.
Buonanotte Lilì!

Com’è bella Lilì, dolce dolce.
Tu sei la più bella di tutte perché… perché sei così.
No, no no no no no no no no, non tagliarti i capelli, ti prego.

Bella, bella bella bella,
così, mia, mia mia mia mia mia mia.
No no, senza rossetto, senza cipria,
senza niente, così, con la faccia lavata.
Bella… bella…
Buonanotte Lilì!

Pretty Face

[Whistling]

You’re the prettiest, your name is Lilì.
Unkempt as you are, I like you better…

Oh no! Darling, stay forever as you are (mine).
Don’t cut your hair, don’t put on make-up anymore.
Honey, but you (sweet) decided, just like that, (mine)
to dress in red, to be called Jijì.

You live like that, among boutiques and cafés,
you only eat filet mignon1, you only drink frappé.
But why?

Oh no! Darling, stay forever as you are (mine),
with a clean, pretty face, with your name Lilì.2
You’re the prettiest, unkempt as you are.
Goodnight Lilì!

Lilì is so pretty, very sweet.
You’re the prettiest of all because… because you’re like that.
No, no no no no no no no no, don’t cut your hair, please.

Pretty, pretty pretty pretty,
like that, mine, mine mine mine mine mine mine.
No no, with no lipstick, with no face powder,
with nothing, like that, wish a clean face.
Pretty… pretty…
Goodnight Lilì!

  • 1. The original has roast beef, in English, which nowadays is quite common, but back then was a posh way to refer to arrosto di manzo {beef roast}.
  • 2. muso = snout (of an animal); ugly/angry/stern/… face (of a person).
musetto is a term of endearment for muso, so here it means “little face, pretty face”, especially as an intimate term used by lovers.
