I appreciate everyone's input here, I think that it is important to note this song is always performed with great enthusiasm, and in a military take over that can be a threat, there are no stories that I have read about Vinicius being jailed or tortured but it is true a poet can be broken or beaten down but at the end of the day the mind is the one thing that can't be controlled and in the event of feeling weighed down the best way to overcome inertia is with enthusiasm.

The military take over mention here lasted twenty five years perhaps Vinicius knew he only had so long to live and needed to carry on.

Vinicius genuinely loved his partner Toquinho and there are always sections of a song or duet they share where they take turns and really shine.

And that is the exchange between a poet or artist and their listener whenever I listen to anything by Vinicius and Toquinho the room really lights up.
