Verbrannte Bücher, verstummte Stimmen

Burned books, silenced voices
A collection of authors and artists who were persecuted and forbidden by the Nazis in Germany.
Right after their rise to power they started to remove books they deemed "un-german" from public libraries and bookstores. Between March and October 1933 thousands of books were burned ritually in public bonfires and in the following years many artists had to leave the country. The books targeted for burning were those viewed as being subversive or as representing ideologies opposed to Nazism. These included books written by Jewish, pacifist, religious, liberal, anarchist, socialist, communist authors, and those who spoke out about gender and sexuality among others. These works could no longer be found in libraries or in the curricula of schools or universities.
Composers and singers were equally persecuted, their music was not played in public anymore, many were forced to emigrate or committed suicide, others were imprisoned and murdered.
