We'd like to announce a new feature - annotations for song lyrics. To create an annotation, select a part of the song, and click to the "annotate" button that will appear.

Only users with roles Member or greater can annotate.

Moderators can delete annotations of others.

The following markup is available for annotations:
*italic*
**bold**
An [link example](https://lyricstranslate.com)

Please use only the language of the song or English for the annotations.

Your suggestions about improvements are welcome!

Great!

I think this new annotation method is much more comfortable than the traditional 'fn' and '/fn' tag1. But, can these new annotations also be implemented in the translations?

But I have several observations:

  1. When I make annotations on a part of the lyrics it works properly. But, when I reload the page or if I go to one of the available translations, the annotations disappear. Is it a temporary bug?
  2. *italic* and **bold** letters work well (under this method), but when I put a link it appears as text and not in this way [LyricsTranslate]. Should it be like that or I don't know if I'm doing it properly?

Annotations are for useful information about the song. Facts, references, hidden meanings. In fact, annotations are footnotes, that any users of LT can add to songs.

Here is the incorrect example of using annotations: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/lee-donghae-beautiful-lyrics.html-0
1) the annotation does not contain useful information
2) the entire song lyrics are involved in the annotation

Such annotation will be deleted.

Maybe in the future. So far, we are not sure that interfering in the translation by other users is a good idea. In addition, this is a nontrivial technical task.

Yes, this bug has already been fixed. We apologize for the inconvenience

Links so far can be inserted this way: [link text](https://linkaddress)

But how to know what content the user added in the lyrics? Can we Mods have a section to see the added annotations and thus know if the content added is appropriate or if it is only spam?

This page will be made in the very near future.

Although the annotations in the translations could only be done by the owner, such as traditional tag fn and /fn. We do not want to get into the translations of others because if everyone makes notes on these translations it would cause a war and countless claims.

Quote:

a song about a great tearful love that is so beautiful that you want to listen and be touched
ворон

test test test test

Regular smile

https://lyricstranslate.com/en/yanka-dyagileva-deklassirovannym-elementa...
Wink smile

I get it that it's an attempt at modernizing the site and finding more ways for the users to interact with it, and I personally don't oppose this since it may be a great addition that we'll have to watch closely to see how well it'll work.

But at the same time, shouldn't the site focus on translation lyrics, since it's in the name of the site and all?

As I said, I personally don't oppose it, but it's obvious that this feature comes straight from Genius. And Genius currently has the "monopoly" when it comes to offering lyrics (them and Musixmatch).

The "gist" of LyricsTranslate was to serve as a repository for translations, a place where you could find the lyrics for your song in your language so you'd understand it if you don't speak the language the song is in, at least that's what I understood when I saw it for the first time...

Right now, LyricsTranslate might hold the "monopoly" over translations, but it will take a lot of influence and exposure for it to fully rival Genius and these other mainstream sites that Google loves to show and mention every chance they get when searching for lyrics.

Clarifying again, not against it, just pointing out since the intentions behind this addition are obvious.

To start with, I'd like to answer back that Lyricstranslate IS a mainstream site for translations that Google loves to show first.

Secondly, I'm not a big fan of Genius though I transcribe for them from time to time. But it's all into R&B, hip-hop and rap hype rather than anything else. They have good annotations though.

Thirdly, I find this new feature extremely timely. One can't get lyrics properly translated unless they can read off all the double entendres, cultural references and preset imagery of the original language. Translators may sometimes be not aware there are any at all.

Anyway, I believe this feature will help translators in the first place. And why should LT challenge Genius of all things? What an idea! It's like setting up a battle between Eminem and Placido Domingo. Let either do their job.

I think the Admins are trying to make the site more informative. I'm game!

Annotations are supposed to be an additional mechanism for better understanding of the source lyrics. It can help create a better translation. Previously we had no way to share additional knowledge about a song, cause song's footnotes can only be added by a song submitter, and comments about a song are inaccessible from a translation.

Will there be a FAQ on this topic?

In what language can annotations be added?
in the language of the song? in English by default?

LyricsTranslate doesn't shows up as much on the front page (which is very important when it comes to clicks) when you search for lyrics from songs being released today, specially Pop and Hip-hop in general, I didn't say LT isn't mainstream, I said it doesn't show up as much as the others.

Besides, Genius is the current favorite because of that, because it focuses mostly (but not exclusively) on R&B and Hip-hop which is trending nowadays, it has a stronger presence online and is much more known generally speaking.

If the idea is to help translators with more information about the lyrics, fine, I understand that. The annotations have their limitations and they could have been implemented or "mutated" instead of bringing a completely different system altogether.

But it will draw some obvious comparisons, which is why I thought it was trying to compete. To me, the "why" was obvious for the addition but, sure... information.

As I said on my original reply, I too think both should focus on their own thing, that's why I said what I did. I thought LT was trying to compete.

Thanks for this feature, it will be really helpful.

There seems to be a bug with editing the annotations though. When I made edits, the new information appeared at first, but the next time I checked, it had reverted to whatever was there before. The only way I was able to get it to work was to just delete the original and add a new one.

It would be helpful if we could see a list of the songs we've annotated the same way we can see our comments, idioms, etc. Right now I can remember which ones I've done because it's only a few, but it would be nice to have an easy way to go find the songs in the future to change something or check to see if we've already added one to a particular song.

I'm running into a problem when linking to a webpage with parentheses at the end, which many Wiki pages have. If I add another parenthesis to close the command, the second parenthesis just shows up as text and breaks the link. If I leave it off, it doesn't properly close the command and the link is still broken. Is there a way around this, or am I doing it incorrectly?

Btw. it seems html anchor tags don't work in annotations.
It would be nice to support them, to allow linking to a wiki page or similar reference material.

The best would be to have the annotation automatically create a link from a mere URL. For instance this annotation I made on this song:
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/heathers-musical-meant-be-yours-lyrics.html

Bring marshmallows
We'll make s'mores!

It would be nice if the system added a s'mores link in the bubble after detecting a single URL in the annotation text.

Mmm... It seems that the format "[link text](https://linkaddress)" only allows one parenthesis to be read for each link that is added in the annotations.

If you add [Hunger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger_(Hamsun_novel)) the system will read the first parenthesis that closes the link command (marked in bold):

[Hunger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger_(Hamsun_novel))
In the annotation, it will show like this: Hunger)

But, if the second parenthesis of the command [Hunger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger_(Hamsun_novel)) (marked in bold) is not added, the system will read it like this: Hunger

This seems to be a bug that should be reviewed by the Admins.

[@lt] Please...

EDIT: Another observation: the links that are added in the annotations, footnotes or those words that are directly linked in the words, when we click on them it causes the links to leave the page instead of opening the links in a new tab.

Can the links be opened in a new tab instead of leaving the LT page? I created an example for the three cases:
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/mar%C3%ADa-rivas-el-manduco-lyrics.html

I want to ask users not to limit the annotations to just a link, but to add at least a small textual explanation to the link in the annotation (a small copy-paste from the article). I think the annotations were conceived to explain something right on the spot)
I'm a little sad that in the annotations and translations people started just posting links to the wiki without explanation. T_T

It's just a suggestion ..

Already works this way.

As a workaround for links with parentheses, we suggest adding "\" before "))" for links to work properly, e.g.
[Hunger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunger_(Hamsun_novel\))

That link doesn't work properly, though. It just goes to a link about the definition of the word hunger and cuts off the part that differentiates Hunger as the name of a novel.
