Hey there!

I've noticed for a while that whenever I add a new song (or edit one that's already available) by adding a handful of artist/group names in the "Also perfomed by" section, the hyperlink with the artist's name usually leads directly to the song itself. Yet, this doesn't always happen.

Let's take as an example artist A whose song X (sung in English) is the original song of numerous covers, both in English and other languages. Then I add artists B, C and D who have covered it. B has a cover in English, C in French, and D in Italian. The covers may be indeed present on their pages, but the hyperlink with the artist's name that appears on the original song, would lead only to C's cover because it shares the same link and thus will be recognised automatically. The others would just redirect to the artist's page. Then, in order to find the cover you're interested in, you'd have to look for it through the artist's other songs. If you don't know it, you'll need to google it, then go back and look for it, but it may not be there at all.

Then let's say that A has recorded X in other languages. The only way to mention any of them is by adding a comment in the "Comment on song" section with a link to their corresponding versions. So far, I've been doing this a couple of times.

Although I'm quite glad the recognising feature is available, it needs to be improved a lot. That's why I suggest the following features to be added, if possible:

1) Adding a bar "Original song (if any) by: [insert artist/group name(s) here]" and another bar next to it or underneath where you can put the link to the respective original (if available), so that the hyperlink leads directly to it, not just to the artist's page. In the cases when the song is in the same language, it won't be a problem being recognised automatically, thus not being necessary to add a link to it. Yet, when the original song and its cover(s) are in different languages, it would be necessary to add a link to the original. In any case, you'd have to add a link just to be sure everything works.

2) Adding a bar "Other versions in another language(s) by the same artist (if any)" and then again, with bars where you'll need to insert either the title of the song or a link to it.

As I have no idea how new features are added to the website, I don't know how time investing this would be, but it would surely be quite handy for everybody. I also have some other suggestions concerning separate bars for albums, singles and years, but I'd leave them for another topic.

So, what's your opinion on this?

Certainly a good idea.
The auto-linking to the song has been implemented not that long ago, though, so it might actually be that also your suggestions are already on the to-do-list of the admins and they just didn't get around to it yet. However, I don't know.

It is an interesting idea in general, however I think it should be more general.
We currently have the field only for the "also performed by" data, but if each individual field were to be extended like a field for a collection item (for a song, translation or artist input), and then an ability to change this "name" (even from some predefined choices like "alternative performance (by)", "original (by)", "cover in another language (by)", and so on) would make this cross-linking work like a charm, or so I hope. We've added a new field "Related" to artists, songs, and translations. For example, If you think that artists A and B are related, you can add this field to Artist A and a link will appear on both artists.

Please suggest how we can improve this feature.

You mean like, if artists A and B have sung a song, then we add artist A in the related field? Or what?

Related item can be any of the following - Artist, Song, or Translation. You can search by name, or paste URL of the page you want to add as related.
You are not allowed to add any of the bundles

I'm getting this even for my own works. But not seeing the feature in action I can only suggest adding a way to specify the type of relationship.

Same here, I also see "you are not allowed to add any of the bundles". https://imgur.com/a/4CboaH3

I think to understand how to use this new feature we must first see how it works. Regular smile
But yes, the idea was something along these lines. If there is a relationship between entries (like a covering artist, an another language version, and so on), then it should be expressed through these "related" links.
[@lt], I'm not sure of the status of the "also performed" and "featuring artist" fields, are they becoming absolute or coexist together with this new feature?

So far, all three fields will coexist together. It looks redundant, but there is no clear understanding how to merge all three fields into one.

OK, I saw how it works. It is essentially I described above. The only thing I don't like is its position. But having said that I don't see how it can be moved above the song in its current form.
I don't think featuring artists can be folded into this new feature, but "also performed" ones could be. This said, for it to work there is a need for some sort of classification of the relations (a fixed list like "covering artist", "the band's member", etc), so that "also performed" can be folded into this "covering artist" category. But then again adding the categories might be unfeasible for all the possible variations of relation users might think of. So for the time being I also see no way to remove this overlap.

By the way, Revision comparison for this feature and for a video compare essentially the resulting HTML.
