Ostend

Ostend
Like a secret lover, you did not recognise my eyes
But you recognised my spleen
And your icy clouds which came to blow their noses at our feet
And your old casino which kept watch
And even hidden right at the end it still spied us
I met all my ghosts there who I still miss everywhere
If I had to die one night, one day
It would be under your grey dress with green all around

Ostend
My anchor is hooked in the belly of old Catalonia
Which bleeds brick red and my heart forever anchored
Deep in that late afternoon when your took my heart from the far end of your Belgium

Ostend
you were pale and fragile like a sickly child
I kept the cloth of mist that covered your shoulders
In the back of my memory, from your eyes the light
And that of the Casino turned towards England

I remember that silence, that wave that goes, that comes
The one that leaves a lingering melody, heard for a long time even from afar
And then that friend who looked at me, happy
To see me at your feet, If he follows you to Ostend
That friend there, he’s a true one

Ostend
Like a secret lover, you did not recognise my eyes
But you recognised my spleen
And your icy clouds which came to blow their noses at our feet
And your old casino was still watching us

He obviously knows his Brel, but he digs into the same themes in a novel way.
This one must have been a tough nut to crack. The French is really delicate.

And even hidden even hidden right at the end it still spied us -> that might that might be shortened

If it had to die one night, one day -> it's him who would have to die

grise et verte autour -> the dress/landscape is grey with a green border

rouge brique -> that's a color, so wouldn't it be "brick red" ?

du bout de ta Belgique -> I rather understand "bout" as "far end" (i.e. very far from Catalonia), but "tip" rather makes me think of a tongue Regular smile

qui laisse une musique longtemps après, même très loin -> Quite poetic a sentence, and the typos and lack of punctuation do not help either.
Something like "which leaves (in your mind) a music that remains even after a long time, even when you're far away"

heureux / de me voir à tes pieds -> "happy to see me..." ?

s'il te suit jusqu'à Ostende, / cet ami là, c'est pour de vrai -> literally "if he follows you up to Ostend, this one friend, it (means his friendship) is for real"

Thanks - I think I've addressed most of those now. :-)

Except for "qui laisse une musique longtemps après, même très loin " - The English still seems to capture that meaning and I'm not seeing the typos... is it "afar" that you're not familiar with? It could probably use a comma but he didn't include one in his lyrics and I didn't like to presume to add one...

/edit - ah it's in the French yes?

Hahaha yes it's the French, I would not rap you on the fingers like an old school teacher Teeth smile

It's just this "leaves behind" that looked like "abandons" to me, like if the music was cast off. Must be my English though.

Au piquet! Wink

Leaves behind work in either sense - however, I've added a 'lingering' to assuage your poetic soul..

My poetic soul sends its best regards.

Yes, that's a good example. I was also thinking of his many songs about friendship.
