You Want To Be Like An American

संस्करण: #1#2#3#4#5
You wear pants with a logo on the back...
A little hat has its visor pointed up...
You go cruising thru Toledo
Like a gangster, everyone looks at you...
You want to be like an American,
mericano, mericano...
Listen to me, how can you do that?
You want to live in (high) fashion,
but if you drink whisky and soda
shortly you'll feel disturbed...
You dance rock and roll
You play baseball...
but the money for your Camels (cigarettes)
who will give it to you? Your mommas purse!
You want to be like an American,
mericano, mericano...
but you were born in Italy!
Listen to me, there's nothing you can do
okay, Napolitan!
You want to be like an American,
You want to be like an American!
How can you understand that I love you,
if you only speak half American?
When you make love under the moon,
how will you understand "I love you?"
You want to be like an American,
mericano, mericano...
Listen to me, how can you do that?
You want to live in (high) fashion,
but if you drink whisky and soda
shortly you'll feel disturbed...
You dance rock and roll
You play baseball...
but the money for your Camels (cigarettes)
who will give it to you? Your mommas purse!
You want to be like an American,
mericano, mericano...
but you were born in Italy!
Listen to me, there's nothing you can do
okay, Napolitan!
You want to be like an American,
You want to be like an American!

This is my own translation of the song. I love this number. I've also written the first verse so that it can be sung to the music, with very few variations from the original Neapolitan/Italian words. I sing it 1st in Italian (1st verse only) and recap it in my English version. So here it is:

English Verse 1:
All of your blue-jeans have a leather label—(like your LEVI’s on the back]
Th’ brim on your baseball cap
is pointing skyward
—(or it’s hangin’ down your back)
Driving like a Big Shot [or: like a gangster*] thru Toledo
You make lots of noise
so everybody looks!

Chorus:
So—Y'wanna be Americano
Mericano, Mericano,
Tell me how you gonna pass?
Wearing all the latest fashions?
When you drink your whiskey & soda
You get knocked right on your ass!
You'll dance that Rock-n-Roll,
You'll play that Bayz-a-ball,
Camels you smoke, and worse!
How can you buy?
Caught your hand in mama’s purse!

Y'wanna be Americano,
Mericano, Mericano?
But you're born in Italy!
Listen here,
you cannot change a thing,
You're stuck in Napoli!
Y'wanna be American,
Tu vou' fa' ll'american!

* like a gangster: I did this once with a friend who was a member of the Italian American Society, and she asked me to change the word "gangster". I'm Italian myself, and I really don't object to the word, but I changed it for her benefit. Eh/.
