獅子山下 (Si ji saan ha)

Submitter's comments:

This is a famous Hong Kong song that represents the spirit of the Hong Kong identity. Many Hong Kongers do not think they are part of Britain or China, and this song describes their unique identity and their struggle to be truly recognised as part of Hong Kong.

Beneath the Lion Rock

In life there is joy
and often tears are inevitable
If we as one can meet beneath the Lion Rock
there will be more smiles than sobs

In life it is often rough
and it is hard not to have any worries
If we are on the same boat
we can all help each other beneath the Lion Rock
and leave our differences behind

Let go of the conflicts we have with each other
and go chase after our dreams
On the same boat we commit to stay with each other
If we are not afraid there is nothing to dread

When we are together at the ends of the skies and seas
we can all challenge our difficulties together hand in hand
We as one can overcome hardships and strive to write down
the timeless story of our home

Let go of the conflicts we have with each other
and go chase after our dreams
On the same boat we commit to stay with each other
If we are not afraid there is nothing to dread

When we are together at the ends of the skies and seas
we can all challenge our difficulties together hand in hand
We as one can overcome hardships and strive to write down
the timeless story of our home

the Lion Rock (獅子山) - A famous mountain in that is one of the most recognisable and famous landmarks in Hong Kong.

the ends of the skies and seas (海角天邊) - The word order is usually inverted, as in 天邊海角, but this means a place far away. Here I used the literal translation since the nuance and the meaning are close enough to be accurate.

the story of our home (香江名句) - here 名句 literally means famous sentences, but is used in the sense of "lines" or story. 香江 literally means the Pearl River Delta that Hong Kong is situated in, but it is used in a sense of "our home" representing a place for all people who overcome hardships.
