The Ballad of Belle Gunness

The Ballad of Belle Gunness1 begins after the flames.
[They] sifted through the ashes for her family's remains.
Three children and her body all had been claimed,
but Belle's was found to be headless.

The farmhand, Joe Maxson2, said for their lives he cried,
but he couldn't wake their slumber, no matter how he tried.
He howled but they could not hear him inside;
for some reason they were down in the cellar.

[Chorus]
Hell's Belle Gunness, the Black Widow of the heartland,
she and love will never be together.
A sick, twisted joker; her heart beats in wild rapture.
They all came to stay forever.

Sheriff Smutzer's3 man was the inquiring kind.
He wondered the reason Belle's head they couldn't find.
Soon the mystery began to unwind.
All they had to do was ask questions.

Apparently Belle wrote her last will a day before,
afraid her life was not too safe anymore.
A jealous man she personally threw out her door
promised he'd return and burn her house down.

[Chorus]

They found Ray Lamphere4 drunk and dirty on the street,
blood stains on his shirt, he claimed to ‘em from meat.
The murder rap and arson he swore he’d beat.
He said the murderer was Belle and he’d prove it.
He led them to a farm and an area so big.
He told them how they did it, and make amends, to dig.
He said there were many others,
but they were fed to the pigs,
but all he did was help her ‘cause he loved her.

[Chorus]

And now the Ballad of Belle Gunness takes yet another turn.
Her past was researched and the things they learned.
A fortune in life insurance claims she’d earned,
but still that didn’t explain all the killing.

She had poisoned two ex-husbands,
two of her children the same,
and ‘most every other body
played a brief stint in her game:
A lonely heart’s answer
searching for a new last name,
that many a lonely rich men are too willing.

[Chorus]

You see: Belle’s God was money.
At the beck she would kill.
Some even say she’s alive still
preying on another man’s vulnerable will.
Well her ace, it's in the Illinois State prison.

And I know why she left.
Now from me she is afraid
I never heard from my brother
since the trip to her in May.

She knows now I’m coming
for a debt to be paid,
and when I find her
She knows I’m going to kill her.

[Chorus]

She knows he came to stay forever.

Gridò, ma loro non lo sentirono;
Per qualche motivo erano giù in cantina.

[Ritornello]

[Ritornello]

Ray Lamphere4 fu trovato ubriaco e sporco in strada,

E so perché se n'è andata.

You are 100% right about the original being worded very awkwardly, but you did a great job translating it   *thumbs_up*   Thank you.
I decided to transcribe it when I saw the request because I found the subject interesting. It piqued my morbid curiosity.
I agree that "and they commenced to dig" sounds way better than "and make amends, to dig". I am not familiar with the artist and I'm not a mind reader, but I assume that he meant: and to make amends (show a little remorse) he (Ray Lamphere) told the authorities what Belle did and where to dig to find the remains of her victims.
"Well her ace, it's in the Illinois State prison" seems to be a very poorly worded metaphor. I think that the artist was comparing Lamphere to the playing card ranked as the highest card in its suit in most card games. I assume this to be true because he was incarcerated there. Maybe he said "it's" instead of "he's" to dehumanize him. However, I'm also guessing.
Thanks again for a great job.

Thanks to you, again :D
I changed the two lines as you said, the first one ended up being way too different from the original text.
