Портрет (Portret) (Angol translation)

Портрет (Portret)

Even the minutes feel like days
The voice is freezing in the air
And between the old hours and piles of books
His frowning image keeps staring
Portrait (4 x)
The branches of alder rested against the window
The smell of perfume, but there's nobody here
Whispering curtains to the sound of wall clock
The face on the wall is shining out

I quite like the sound of this.
There is an interesting revival of late 80's cold wave in Russia, with bands like Утро, Human tetris or Motorama.

замирает -> "is freezing/dying" ?

the sound of wall clock -> isn't a "a" missing there?

излучает свет -> maybe "radiates light" ?

Actually, Утро is the side project of the Motorama members Regular smile

"is freezing/dying" -> yes, that's right, my mistake

"a" missing -> well, I decided to drop it due to the abstract nature of what is happening

"radiates light" -> i think, "radiates" is more technical / scientific term

Круто, я не знала. Мне нравится Motorama, надо будет и Утро послушать Regular smile

Ah ok, they sure sound like they could be brothers Regular smile

funny, I thought "emits" sounded more technical than "radiates" Regular smile

Anyway, I think you're right and both of those words are of technical usage, so I change it

Излучать - same root as луч - освещать, озарять

petit élève    Vasárnap, 17/06/2018 - 16:25

do you think "свет" could mean "the world" here?

Sophia_    Vasárnap, 17/06/2018 - 16:27

Можно я тоже отвечу?
Я не думаю.
Здесь свет в значении "Light"

Igeethecat    Vasárnap, 17/06/2018 - 16:32

No, it’s more like ‘sparkle’, ‘illuminating’, not sure about the face on the wall, you know I’m not very good at direct translation.

Video changed. Now it's only the song in question. Излучать свет in this context means to be bright with emotions. They are talking about a sudden change in the portrait. So it should go "The face on the wall is shining out" Regular smile
