The sheep look up

So here we are, seven or eight billion
dim-witted children deluding ourselves
with science and religion while
the four horsemen champ at the bit.

Life vanishes around us,
as if eaten away by an aggressive cancer
while we endeavour to squander with an idiotic zeal
the last treasures of the Earth.

But the oil era is coming to an end
and soon we'll have to fight over
the last ploughable fields
under the whims of a weather turned mad.

Your way of life is not up for negotiation
but nature doesn't care, it doesn't negotiate.
When there won't be enough left even for the rich
the four horsemen will come back and do the cleanup.

Wake up. Go back to sleep. No matter.
The best we can hope for
is a bit of pity mingled with the hatred
the survivors will feel for us in a hundred years.

Nice work, in both languages! You're really flexing your creative muscles eh? :)
I wouldn't presume to critique the French and the English is excellent. I only wonder why you've been a bit more sparing in the English.
ie - why not a violent or maybe aggressive cancer?
...squander with idiotic zeal

Also, The Blind Herd sounds good but why not make the French title the same as the English. Les Moutons lèvent la tête or something?

/edit. Maybe that's the French title of the book?
//edit. Oh yes, so it is... :)

Sounds like he might be considered a writer of journalism rather than speculative fiction now! ;)
Proliferating is good although I wonder if "an aggressive cancer" might be better here? It's the term used for a fast growing cancer. Ie, the worst kind.

What is the "les quatre cavaliers"? Does it mean "pollution, overpopulation, egotism and fluffy cats" or something else?

Funny thing, in Russian the first Horseman is called Чума. (Plague)

Such a great book - I think of it every time I'm on the M25 maybe due another re-read now that poor old Terry is no longer with us.
I do not know this Russian book but it sounds rather wonderful! :)

"The Master and Margarita" is a masterpiece, really!

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:00

But you must read it in Russian
Any, even a good one, translation won’t do the justice ;)

   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:36

Yes, '"Morphine" is good one too, I agree.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:29

Just out of curiosity, which syllable do you stress «

Sophia_Sophia_
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:31

Hmm, maybe I'll track it down in French to give myself a workout! :)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:23

If you want to read it (and you should), read English translation, please
Double translation might not work well, unless you understand French by heart :)

GavinGavin
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 15:43

Well I do read novels in French too. But it's true, adding another level of possible misunderstanding might be silly. :)

Quote:

Noblesse oblige," said the cat and poured Margarita some clear liquid into a conical glass.
"Is this vodka?" asked Margarita weakly.
The cat jumped resentfully in his chair.
"Forgive me, my lady," he croaked, "Would I ever allow myself to pour vodka for a lady? This is pure alcohol!"-After Woland's Ball

"You're not Dostoevsky," said the citizeness, who was getting muddled by Koroviev.
"Well, who knows, who knows," he replied.
"Dostoevsky's dead," said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.
"I protest!" Behemoth exclaimed hotly. "Dostoevsky is immortal!" -When seeking entry at Griboedov's.

Off context, I understand this like
We don’t speak the same language OR we speak speak different languages, meaning that they just don’t understand each other

Has it different meaning in M&M?

Sophia_Sophia_
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 18:52

На этом построен мир--> more like "The world is based on this"
не знала ---> in this context I would say "never experienced" rather than "had no idea of"

Sophia_Sophia_

"Should have his liar's tongue cut [off]" would be pretty enough in the end. And it's a new sentence as you might have noticed...
Then it should be something like the following:
Who's told you there is no such thing as a true, sincere and everlasting love? That liar should have his foul tongue cut off!

Final nit-pickings from me:
"seven or eight billions of retarded children" is a little unusual, "seven or eight billion retarded children" would be more normal English.
Two Gs in aggressive - Damn those double consonants eh?
:)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 21:42

Can you find better word for ‘retarded’?

GavinGavin
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 21:49

Well, retarded is pretty offensive but then so is demeuré so I think that's deliberate. Other possibilities would be half-witted, backward, imbecilic, dim-witted...
Slow-witted...

GavinGavin
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 22:07

Well retarded *is* strong. The only problem is that it's very non-pc. However, personally I think it's good - it's meant to be a scathing critique n'est-ce pas?
Dim-witted works well though if you want to avoid ruffling too many feathers.

GavinGavin

Thus spake Petit Elève ;)

I think dim-witted does sound a little better actually, now that you've changed it.

Indeed - while we're far from the first generation to predict dire consequences for the generations to come we do seem to be perilously close to a tipping point. If not several steps beyond it already.
And I don't think we've ever seen a world leader so gleefully stomp over the few positive steps achieved. Certainly a grim forecast. The real choice seems to be which of the horseman gets to win the race...gentlemen place your bets.

GavinGavin
   Hétfő, 25/06/2018 - 16:54

I always find myself imagining some kind of fertility reducing plague. Nobody has to suffer or die just an enforced population reduction.
Then I think on and realise that this would raise all sorts of socio-political problems. Lack of a younger generation to support the existing population, commoditization of the fertile and of children (Handmaid's Tale)... but at least in 50 years or so the population could be back under a billion.
But yeah, increasing hostility as the world fights over the dwindling scraps seems the most likely future. Unless the comet arrives first to save our dignity...

GavinGavin
   Hétfő, 25/06/2018 - 21:04

Yes a good dose of empathy with maybe a side serving of humility. They don't like it up 'em! If only we could make everyone feel the full brunt of their own actions eh?

Put me in mind a little of Peter Gabriel's "Here comes the flood" - he sang of what would happen if there was a flood of telepathy, of how only those who were open and honest would survive. But for telepathy one could easily read empathy - one would surely follow the other?

It's strange to see the dissatisfaction with Macron from this side of the channel. I mean no doubt he's an a-hole but against the anglos he at least looks vaguely competent. But maybe that's why he's dangerous? Only Canada seems to be at all forward looking at the moment.

but:
There are 7 billion people.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 22:38

That’s the best grammar lesson, I got today, thank you
And if it will be 7.000.001, how would you say?

GavinGavin
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 22:51

Seven million and one.
Also note that in English it's commas not points. Points are just used to separate the decimal fractions.
So 7,000,001 (or 7,000,001.00)
:)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 23:13

Thanks, I’m totally cool with commas, the reason I made them in points, is that I am learning Spanish and one site insisted to use points, and I think we did the same in Russian ...
And the question about 7 millions and one came from my stupid curiosity, I am sorry
It is about me learning Spanish too..

Thanks a lot for your responses. It means a lot, really...

GavinGavin
   Vasárnap, 24/06/2018 - 23:45

No problem, glad to be of assistance!
French (and I think Spanish) use points where English uses commas and vice-versa.

It's worth remembering that Americans tend not to say "and". While Brits say "one hundred and one", Americans just say "one hundred one". Always sounds wrong to me! ;)
