Beirut addio

Beirut addio, ti lascerò
per ritornare a casa mia, ma soffrirò,
per ritrovare vecchi amici che non ho più,
Beirut addio, ti ricorderò.

Le sere al Caves du Roy
con tanta gente intorno a me,
        Hamra e i café-trottoirs
        senza milizie e kalašnikov,
        in abito da sera
        eri sempre uno splendor,
        oggi sei cambiata,
        che tristezza dentro il cuor...

Beirut addio, ma piangerò
come si piange per amore, di più non so,
come si piange un caro amico che non c’è più,
Beirut addio, ritornerò !

        E riapriremo insieme
il nostro vecchio Caves du Roy,
        berremo con gli amici
        alla tua felicità,
        e l'abito da sera
        anche se stretto brillerà
        per ricordare al mondo
        la tua grande civiltà...

Beirut addio, non piangerò,
come un ragazzo innamorato t'aspetterò,
come si aspetta un caro amico che arriverà,
Beirut addio, ritornerò !

Sce la la la...

So long Beirut

So long Beirut, I will soon leave you
to return home, but I will suffer,
to reunite with old friends that I no longer have,
so long Beirut, I will remember you.

The evenings at the Caves du Roy1
with so many people all around me,
Hamra2 and the café-trottoirs
without militias and kalashnikovs,
in an evening dress3
you were always a delight4
nowadays you have changed,
so much sadness strikes my heart...

So long Beirut, I will surely cry,
as one grieves for love, that which I know no longer...
as one weeps for a dear friend, who is no more,
so long Beirut, I will return!

And together we will reopen
our good ol' Caves du Roy,
we will drink amongst friends
toasting, to your happiness,
and the evening gowns
even if they will shine less grandly than before
will remind the world still
of your great nobility5...

So long Beirut, I will not cry,
like a love struck boy, I will wait for you,
as one waits upon a dear friend to arrive,
so long Beirut, I will return!

Sce la la la...

Hello TrumpGuy.
I have reconsidered my evaluation.
Everyone is subjective when appreciating something.
But a translation can be done well in many ways, not only in the way I like it.
About: "anche se stretto brillerà".
we understand what it means, but it's not easy to translate it.
Best regards.

I had to add words and further explain some lines so they'll make sense in English.
How would you translate "anche se stretto brillerà" for example?

My mother tongue is Hebrew, with English being my second language, why do you ask? does it make any difference here?
I did answer your question about Swedish - I asked you to choose songs you like. This wasn't a "task" nor anything "official" just a friendly request.

Thank you Tramp Guy for adding words and for the explanations.
.
My translation would be:
anche se stretto brillerà > even tight, it will shine
Grammatically complete, it would look:
anche se fosse stretto, brillerà > even if it were tight, it will shine
.
Well, here on LT everyone presents himself. You don’t.
Besides you are a moderator, someone who is supposed to advice others.
I congratulate you for the very good command of the English language.
You are asking me: does it make any difference here?
The only difference is at the number of yellow stars: they are a little more generous with translators who are not ‘native’.
.
As you can read in my presentation, I feel Latin and I love romance languages.
I do not master (nor like) Germanic languages or songs.
However, on your request, I have translated 14 songs to Swedish, without getting any thanks, stars, or a written line.
My assignment is done and ended.

"even if it were tight, it will shine"
Well, this doesn't make much sense - I hope you see it. First of all, it's not "it" - we're talking in plural here. 'Abito di sera' translates to 'evening dress' or 'gowns', but either way, it's a dress worn by the city as a whole, either metaphorically or indicating that all its inhabitants are well dressed. You're "borrowing" your translation from Italian, which is fine literally - but doesn't make much sense in English. I set long and hard on some of these sentences trying to match them as good as I could, I could've used the literal translation, but it would be of a much lesser quality and comprehensibility.

This site is free to use by all, even those who choose to remain completely anonymous (which I'm far from btw).
And I didn't really get what you meant about the rating? - According to what you said I should get more stars?

I know that you prefer Latin and Romance languages. You translated some songs into Swedish, songs you like and wanted translated for some reason. Now people are free to like and rate them just as they are free to do so on your Latin and Romance ones. I didn't even see them, I didn't ask for any specific one, and I can't even rate the most of then as they are mostly from languages I do not master fully. I don't even master Swedish fully, as the language I learned was Norwegian.

Hello Tramp Guy,

First I want to apologize; I know there are countries where the personal security is a problem.
On Internet I can find the address of all my friends, both those who live in Romania and those who live abroad. Except for those who have emigrated in Israel, where for security reasons the telephone book is not available to the public.

About Lyrics Translate.
I consider strange that here everyone hides himself behind an odd name.
I appear with my own name and I am proud to be able to move myself in different languages, although a master I am not; up to now nobody have aggressed me nor stolen my money nor destroyed my home.
The only risk I take is that I may receive nice letters from women, too young and beautiful for me.
But I know how to defend myself.

Bye bye.

WOW seriously, are you kidding me?
Israel is a free and open democratic country with no security issues - certainly no internet restrictions. It is years and decades advanced over Romania, so much so actually, that you can't even put the two in comparison. I don't know what you think, or where you get your ideas from, but it seems like you're a bit out of touch.

And about the internet, in general, it is not uncommon for people to choose to remain anonymous - and no one has a problem with it. I already told you my reasons way back, and I also never hid anything when someone ask me where I'm from or what's my name, so I don't think I fit your example.

Thanks, and it's nice to hear from you again dear Valeriu, it's been a while :)

I don't actually recall what the previous rating was or what the heck we were talking about in this long conversation, which doesn't matter that much anyway, but I think maybe you should leave your original post (wording) for the sake of clarity and add your renewed evaluation post right after, maybe after an "EDIT:" title.

Other then that, how are you doing? I hope all is well with you

Hello TrampGuy.
The rating before: you were given only four stars.
Everything is well with me, except that we had a very hot and dry summer.
I like this song a lot; and the present situation in Beirut has changed for the better.
All the best to you and to yours !
