- Hidalgo:
Refers to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla a Catholic priest, leader of the Mexican War of Independence and recognized as the Father of the Nation.
- Guerrero:
Refers to Vicente Ramón Guerrero Saldaña, a Mexican soldier and statesman who become the nation's second president. He was one of the leading generals who fought against Spain during the Mexican War of Independence.
- virrey:
There were three viceroys during this period but the one that's being referred to is Félix María Calleja del Rey, a Spanish military officer and viceroy of New Spain from March 4, 1813, to September 20, 1816, during Mexico's War of Independence. He succeeded in killing the three famous leaders of these revolts, Hidalgo, Allende, and Morelos.
- El abrazo de Acatempan:
Failing to defeat the insurgency, Iturbide adopted the cause of independence and allied with Guerrero (an event known as the "Embrace of Acatempan").
