The expression arises from show business.

The belief is that anyone's wish of good fortune, a successful show, will result in a "jinx", an inevitable curse, on the act.

Of course, breaking a leg on stage would be a "jinx", a nasty stroke of bad luck, so the supposition is that if you wish good luck on someone it results in bad, likewise if you wish bad luck on someone, it results in good.

Break a leg" is a typical English idiom used in theatre to wish a performer "good luck".
... The expression probably reflects a superstition (perhaps a theatrical superstition) in which directly wishing a person "good luck" would be considered bad luck, therefore an alternative way of wishing luck was developed.

"Break a leg" in lyrics

Eminem - No Love

[Intro: Haddaway, Eminem, & Lil Wayne]
Love, love
Love, love, love
[Mumbling chorus]

j-hope - Safety Zone

발맞춰 살아가지만, 삐걱대
애써 나를 위해 외치는 듯해
'Break a leg'
In my zone, 도심 속 잘 맞춰

Tangled (OST) - That's My Dream

Hook Hand Thug :
I'm mean and very sinister and I scare (people) with my face
And my hands of blood aren't clean
In spite of being so coarse, being violent and having a hook

Ghali - Wily Wily

You learning a new word and repeating it,
Who defames you but doesn't talk when you meet him,
Who says "Break a leg" and hopes that you drop dead,
The Italian people who let themselves be fooled,

Oxxxymiron - Intertwined

Everything is intertwined, a sea of threads, but
Pull a thread, a clew will go after
This world is a spindle, there's zero coincidences
To be a thread or a music string, or a bowstring for a battle

Emir Đulović - Shoes

The time has come, the time to live with you

And, thank God, even when I break a leg, I run
Because without you, I can't stand the nights

The Police - Walking On The Moon

Giant steps are what you take
Walkin' on the moon
I hope my leg don't break
Walkin' on the moon

Claudio Capéo - Rich

At the age when one disowns their dad, you'll disown me
And I won't make manners, nor cinema
You'll tell me shit 1

  • 1. I'm unsure, but this expression could mean "you'll wish me luck". Sometimes in France, before an exam or an important performance peple will say "Je te dis merde" which literally means "I tell you shit" but it's like saying "break a leg" in English. You say it because the belief is that actually wishing somenody "good luck" will bring about bad luck.
So this line could mean one of two things:

Pinguini Tattici Nucleari - Vegetables

A word is too much
While two are too few
So break a leg, Princess Mononoke
Because I'm done with sad songs

Demet Akalın - Married, happy, with children

Before the storm to kiss goodbye
To my heart’s range your mind’s shadow
I quarreled to everyone because of separation
But I’m unable to break devil’s leg

xikers - Break A Leg

용기를 주는 sign

Break a leg
밤이 새도록 뛰어, all night long (Woah-oh-oh)

Pavel Callta - The Song

A returning to my birth country
An old woman beside me
I'm sitting, she's standing
In the public transport, she is looking coldly

Måns Zelmerlöw - Story of ESC (That's Eurovision)

The singers come together like songbirds of a feather
For victory they hope and pray and beg
[Måns]: Wait there in the green room, an often rather mean room, wishing all of our competitors break a leg
[Petra]: The impact of the show I cannot overstate

j-hope - Safety Zone

I live my life in step, but I am stiff
I try and shout it out for myself
Break a leg
In my zone, I do well in the city

Kasta - Radio signals

Here she is, herself, fast beside!
Heart has swelled and gone up to throat...
So, break a leg! I stood up obediently
And with horror understood, that I`m walking right to her,

S.A.R.S. - What a Lovely Day

I am the morning that breaks the dream
Bad weather on the most beautiful day
No, I don't really know
What is good and what is wrong

Julia Engelmann - Grapefruit

Gloom hangs above you on the wall
Like a very old garland with a sea of elephants
And concrete balloons
Which are shaped like monsters

LOVECRAFT - Skeleton Sam

He's the graveyard legend of the danging game
Rumor has it he invented how to knock 'em dead
He's the reason we all say "break a leg"

OR3O - GREEDY

Listen to my advice boys
If you come upon a casino
Don’t deal with the devil

Pierce the Veil - Currents Convulsive

So congratulations
(You)
Break a leg tonight, what a shame
I heard the understudy died under the knife
