  This sample is a callback to Epik High’s debut 2003 album, Map of the Human Soul. On “Go”, the opening track of Map, the exact same sample is used at the beginning.

  DJ Friz, who produced and scratched on 2 Cool 4 Skool, also worked closely with Epik High (via his group, Planet Shiver) on a 2009 album of remixes called Remixing the Human Soul.

  The choice to begin the first track of their debut album in exactly the same way Epik High began the first track on their debut album is a huge homage to the group, but may also be a statement of solidarity and a statement about the type of hip hop artist BTS is aiming to be.

  BigHit Entertainment is the name of BTS' record label / management company, founded February 1, 2005, by Bang Si-hyuk, a songwriter, composer, and producer who previously worked on such iconic groups as g.o.d. (with Park Jin-young), Rain, and Wondergirls. BigHit’s slogan is “Music and Artists for Healing.”

• DJ Friz:

  DJ Friz (real name Kim Jae-hwan) is a Korean hip hop producer and turntableist who has worked with Epik High, Dynamic Duo, Drunken Tiger, DOK2, Heize & more. He created the electronic/dance music production team, Planet Shiver (플래닛 쉬버) with composer/producer Philtre, who later composed tracks for BTS' WINGS album.
