I Would Have Danced
(I would have liked,
I would have liked,
I would have liked to dance.)
I would have liked to dance,
I would have liked to spin,
until the end of time.
All giddy with joy,
all enthralled with you,
to the rhythm of love.
All night long,
or perhaps for all of life,
at least for the time to get to know one another.
If I had known, I would have
understood as a confession
everything that you said to me
with your eyes.
~~~~~
But ever since then
I still dance in my dreams
with your name on my lips.
I miss you,
your memory surrounds me,
because it was you,
yes you,
love.
The translation of the French adaptation lyrics back into English is difficult because of the bizarre lyrics chosen to make the French adaptation. It in fact sounds rather gauche and mumbo-jumbo. And, even in French, "toute imprégnée de toi, au rythme de l'amour" in the first stanza is so loaded that it's hard to imagine anyone singing it without cracking up. I chose to use the phrase "all entralled with you" simply to avoid creating something that sounded truly ridiculous or obscene in English. Leave it to the great Dalida to just sing her way right through it like it was just another love song ...
