Madonnina blu

I

In una chiesa non lungi dal Piave
un lume solo nel buio era acceso;

II

E la fiammella dal lume d'argento
incuriosita, s'allunga a guardar:
c'è un vecchio prete1che accostasi lento
e fa un inchino davanti all'altar:

"La me perdona, Signora, se vegno
a presentarme cussi a la Madona;

III

"El paradiso xe belo, sì tanto,
ma ste casete me xe tanto care
e tanto caro me xe 'l camposanto
dove riposa mio pare e mia mare.

"De tanto in tanto bisogna che basa
quele do pietre, che veda el mio Piave;
San Piero 'l dise: "Don Bepo, stè a casa",

"Anche sta sera go fato un zireto,
me son stracà che l'età no perdona.
Go dito: andemo a sentarse un pocheto
e a far do ciacole co la Madona!

IV

"Cossa ghe par, benedeta da Dio,
de sti tedeschi? I xe pezo del lovo!3
La staga atenta, Madona, a so Fio,
che se i lo ciapa i lo incioda da novo.

"Go patio tanto, Madona mia bela,
vedendo i nostri fradeli furlani
in man de quei...

"I roba tuto, i xe bestie, i bastona;
fin ne le case sti sporchi i ne va;
e quando i branca una povera dona,
se la xe bela... Signor che pietà!

V

"Madonna Santa, pensando a sti dani
fati a le ciese più pace no go!
E sti assassini i se dise cristiani!
Cristiani lori? In malorsega, no".4

Viva l'Italia" e in ciel ritornò.

Celestial Lady

I

In a church not so far from the Piave1
Only a lamp was lit in the dark
There was, all around, a sweet smell
Of old incense flying in the air

On a chapel, between the rose palms
A Madonna, in a celestial dress,
Directed her sad lovely eyes
At the sweet sleep of the Christ Child.

Here we are, the door discloses, and a footstep
Is heard, sounds, it comes closer.
The Saints say: "who's making that noise
That could wake up th Holy Child?"

II

And the little flame from the silver lamp
Curiosed, comes to see:
There's an old Priest2 who showly approaches
And makes a bow in front of the altar.

"Please forgive me, Madam, if I'm
Showing up like this to Our Lady,
I must talk to you, I know, I'm not worth,
But I know, that You are so kind!"

I'm the Pope Sarto, I'm dead long ago,
But in these villages, my Lady, I was born...
From this belltower we can see the garden
Where I used to play when I was a boy!"

III

The Heaven is nice, yes very nice,
but this little houses are dear to me
And so dear it is the cemetery
In which my father and my mother sleep.

Once in a while I must kiss
these two graves, I must take a look to my Piave
Saint Peter says "Father Joseph, stay at home!"
But he opens the door, and lends me the key.

"Even tonight I made a tour,
I got tired, and the age doesn't spare
I said: let's have a seat
And talk to Our Lady!

IV

"What do You think you, Holy Mother
About those germans They're worse than wolves!
Pay attention, Holy Mother, to your Child,
That, if they capture him, they'll put him on the cross again.

I suffered so much, my beautiful Holy Lady,
Seeing our Fiulian brothers
in their hands... (please forgive me, You too
If I talk bad... ) of those bastards!

They stole everything, they're like animals, they club people
They even get inside our homes;
And if they find a poor lady,
If she's nice... my Lord what a pain!

V

"Holy Mother, thinking about the damages
they did to the churches I can't find any peace!
And those assassins say they're Christians!
Christians? Them? They can go to hell, or not?"

The Holy Lady who's on the altar
Among many roses, in her celestial dress,
Bows her head and two bitter tears
Fall on the Holy Child's curls.

And the old Pope in his pure heart
Sent this prayer to the soldiers:
"Save Italy, sons, keep going!"
Long live to Italy" and he went back to Heaven.
