Mensk and Minsk

Dear residents of Minsk and guests of the capital1,
I want to share my idea with you.
To put it short, it’s strange, but c'est la vie:
We live in our capital as if we had 2 families.

At the same time we live
In two cities.
Split personality
Drives us crazy.
But can’t we ever
glue or sew
Mensk and Minsk, the two halves
of the capital’s soul, together?

The Mensk city is the first city of the two
Can’t be seen on the recent maps.
It exists in the hearts, it exists in the heads
Of many people who live in the Minsk city.
And in that Minsk we have residence permit, and the municipal committee,
And the ice hockey stadium, and the fence of concrete,
The ghost shadows of the ruined buildings,
And the days of my childhood that has gone away...

At the same time we live
In two cities.
Split personality
Drives us crazy.
But can’t we ever
glue or sew
Mensk and Minsk together?

Minsk has joyless names —
There is a Collector street and a Basis street,
And our people guarantees there
Fulfilment of the task given...
But it’s pleasant to walk in Mensk,
The windows of small shops give cosy light,
There are gothic towers of old Catholic churches,
There are roof tiles and the streets paved in stone2, there are yards and fortifications there...

At the same time we live
In two cities.
Split personality
Drives us crazy.
But can’t we ever
glue or sew?..

Everything gets confused
in Minsk: bread and matzo,
And Great October Revolution and Radaŭnica3
And drunk tears, and a pop music of such a sort
That can be cured neither by Mezim nor by Upsa4
Well, and nothing can be done to Mensk,
It can’t be ruined, can’t be occupied.
Your Mensk will never rot and never burnt down,
It will always speak to you in your language5

At the same time we live
In two cities.
At the same time we live
In two cities.

  • 1. This form of address is often used in formal announcements, for example in public transport.
  • 2. Translated as if written «дахоўка і брук» '[roof] tiles and stone-pavemenets', because that's what I hear. The lyrics given say «дахоўка на стрэхах» 'tiles on the roof'.
  • 3. Radaŭnica is an Old Slavic holiday, day of worshipping deceased relatives. Although it’s a Christian holiday, it is likely to retain traits of the pagan traditions. Great October Revolution Day is another holiday celebrated in Belarus. It led to creation of the Sovied Union where the religion was discouraged, so celebrating both those holidays is strange.
  • 4. Names of pills. I.e. the pop music makes the songwriter sick.
  • 5. I.e., in Belarusian. Minsk is mostly a Russian-speaking city, and the Belarusian counterpart — Mensk — exists only in dreams of the author.

The traditional Belarusian name of Minsk is Mensk (spelled Miensk in the Lacinka orthography). Minsk is the Russian name, which is also used in the Narkomovka dialect (created by the Soviets).
