Penso a lei e sto con te (Alone again)
Io non mi ricordo più
Se fosse primavera o no,
Ricordo che caminavo per le strade
Quando ad un tratto lì.
Davanti agli occhi miei
Un angelo passò,
Mi sorrise poi
I capelli suoi li ho trovati
Nel mio letto.
E quando mi svegliai
Ho cercato di capire,
Il viso suo com’era
Sognavo o era vera.
Scusa amore mio
Ma da quel giorno io,
Io penso a lei
Però tu hai lasciato in me un ricordo grande,
Un ricordo che resterà con me
Fai quel che vuoi, ti amo.
Adesso dimmi tu che cosa
Che cosa un uomo deve fare,
In questi casi
Però tu hai lasciato in me un ricordo grande ,
Un ricordo che resterà con me
Fai quel che vuoi, ti amo.
Fai quel che vuoi... ti amo.

I Think of Her and I Am With You
I no longer recall
whether it was springtime or not.
I remember strolling the streets
when all of a sudden there,
in front of my eyes,
an angel passed.
Then she smiled at me—
I later found her hair
in my bed.
And when I awoke,
I sought to sort out
whether her face was
just a dream, or was it really true?
Sorry my love—
but, since that day, I—
I think of her
and I am with you.
The winter began for us.
The sun faded—
that woman was no longer here—
she had been erased from my mind.
But a letter came—
and my heart stopped—
"I am the woman who, that night, you
took into in your bed."
"You won't believe this, and I do not want you to believe me,
but you have left in me a deep memory—
a memory that will remain with me.
Do what you want, I love you."
Now tell me what—
what should a man do
in such a situation?
I stay with you and think of her.
I think of her and I am with you.
Do what you want, I love you.
Do what you want, I love you."

An Irish singer-songwriter named Gilbert O'Sullivan (hmmm, I wonder if his parents liked Gilbert & Sullivan?) had a big hit with this song in 1972 under the title "Alone Again (Naturally)." The Italian lyrics bear no relationship at all to the original English lyrics--it is a clear case of appropriating a great melody but changing the message completely. Then again, both versions of the song are about very duplicitous love relationships and lots of regrets with very few apologies.
