The Rebellion of Rubon Manel
It was the year of 1910, kid
when the rebellion of Rubon Manel1 took place
They took away our wives, they arrested our people
Because of one or two grams of purging nuts!
Eh eh eh, what a suffering in the world!
Eh, those were times of pain beyond measure
Xila di Pala didn't deserve to go to jail
Nhanha Bombolom didn't deserve to go to jail
All men looked adrift and lost
Because their wives had been sent to prison
Eh eh eh, what a suffering in the world!
Eh, those were times of pain beyond measure
They lost their senses and didn't know where to go
Nhanha Bombolom treated them with disregard
The guard stumbled on a stone and hit his neck on the ground
My people, he ran back to his place!
My people, he ran far away from there!
Eh eh eh, what a suffering in the world!
Eh, those were times of pain beyond measure
They called out Priest Duarte
who had nothing to do with the rebellion
They made a speech full of nice words
But we were with our feet on the ground
Eh eh eh, what a suffering in the world!
Eh, those were times of pain beyond measure
- 1. Pantera's composition "Raboita di Rubon Manel" (The Rebellion of Rubon Manel) acts as a repository of historical memory by bringing to the fore an important chapter in the life of Santiago that has also been immortalized in poetry, theater, and sculpture. In 1910 a group of women were accused of stealing purgera seeds (purgueira in Portuguese, or oil-yielding nut) from a local Portuguese landowner's property. The mounted police came and burst into the women's homes, beating them up and arresting them. Subsequently, the locals revolted agains the landowners and colonial authorities. Several battles ensued between locals and the police producing a number of casualties on both sides. A new republican Portuguese governor took power in Cape Verde, he was sympathetic to the rebellious Cape Verdeans, prompting him to act as a mediator in the conflict while promising agrarian reform. A few years later he was forced out of office for not cracking down on the rebellion. There was also no agrarian reform in sight. The song "Raboita de Rubon Manel" eulogizes the rebellion as it dramatically narrates the story in details, including concrete references to those women who were victimized by the Portuguese. The song uses the batuku rhythm as a foundation, while the melody conveys a sweet mournful sentiment punctuated by the repeated lament: "forti duedu na mundu / forti N pasa mal tamanhu" (deep pain in life/I suffered terribly). Lura's vigorous and sensitive performances is effective in expressing a sense of gravitas that this song demands.
