Tequila with lime

I carry music in my soul
and a song here in my heart;
a song that tears me part
when I put it next to love;
I learned it in those fields,
with wounds from fallow lands;
sliced up from machetes
and the vibrations of a Mexican guitarrón.

I learned it in Palenque,
betting on a fine rooster
and it feels enough to me
to sing it here;
to the pride of Jalisco
they named it my godfather,
and it has no more godchildren
because it already has me.

Wild and red blood
challenging like the edge of a dagger,
it's the blood of my people:
dreamers and singers.
Wild and quarrelsome blood,
boastful and argumentative
like the prickly pear cactus.

On the legs of a horse
I always bet my money;
and if sometimes I lose,
I take it out on a gamble.

I always carry at my lips
the tune that I love most,
and to see who it's played for,
and to sing it for your health.

Wild and red blood
challenging like the edge of a dagger,
it's the blood of my people:
dreamers and singers.
Wild and quarrelsome blood,
boastful and argumentative
like the prickly pear cactus.
