Asinus et galli

Qui natus est infelix, non vitam modo
Tristem decurrit, verum post obitum quoque
Persequitur illum dura fati miseria.
Galli Cybebes circum in quaestus ducere
Asinum solebant baiulantem sarcinas.
Is cum labore et plagis esset mortuus,
Detracta pelle sibi fecerunt tympana.
Rogati mox a quodam, delicio suo
Quidnam fecissent, hoc locuti sunt modo:
Putabat se post mortem securum fore;
Ecce aliae plagae congeruntur mortuo

The donkey and the eunuch priests of Cybele

Who is of unlucky birth, not only
leads a sad life, but in truth, even after death,
that is followed by harsh misery of fate.
The eunuch priests of the Phrygian goddess Cybele, thinking it to their advantage,
used a donkey to carry their loads.
It dying of its labours and wounds,
they removed its hide and made drums with it.
Asked then by someone, what they had done
to their dear donkey, they replied thus:
He thought that after his death he'd be at peace;
behold, further sufferings are brought upon the dead.1

  • 1. i.e. the donkey's hide continues to be beaten after its death.
