  • 1. a mulata is a woman or girl with one white parent and one black or South or Central American Indian parent. My translation uses the Spanish word mulata because the English word "halfbreed" is generally regarded as offensive
  • 2. popular dance, originally dominican but spread to many Caribean countries

Thanks. I guess I should make it mulata, and add a foonote.

It is, but if that is the most correct translation for "mulata" there's not much that can be done... but perhaps "mulatta"? Although it is archaic, also not sure if it is offensive...

I guess the Spanish word is not offensive or Iglesias wouldn't sing it. So using the spanish word and having a note explaining what it means should be OK. The Spanish Royal Academy dictionary gives the definition "Dicho de una persona: Nacida de negro y blanca, o de blanco y negra." when it's a noun indicating a person. It can also mean a particular crustacean. But some Spanish-English dictionaries give "halfbreed" as the English translation; and my footnote takes the view that the non-caucasian parent can be either negro or South or Central American Indian, which I've been told is common usage in Central and parts of South America. I'm not sure what a person whose parents are a mulato and a mulata is called (whether in Spanish or in English).

We have ‘мулатка’ in Russian and it is not offensive at all :)

African American

I don't know if there is a word for it (in English), but isn't African American for anyone who is American of African heritage?

You are right, and there must be a word in English, archaic most likely.

"Halfbreed" isn't necessarily offensive but "mulata" is a female offspring of parents of whom one is Caucasian and the other Negro. In English that kind of offspring is referred to as "mulatto". Halfbreed could be a mix of any two races, it usually refers to people who are half Native American (Indian) and half European or white.
....nowadays any kind of label having to do with race could be considered derogatory.
