  • 1. A tram ticket used to have six numbers on it. If the sum of the first and the last three numbers was equal that was a lucky one. People used to read a lot in public transport so they kept those tickets as bookmarks for good luck.

"Alas" station

Not Yet… (The Station “SorrY”)
translation by Dmytro Zelenskyy 2016-01-09

Let’s open the novel -
the last page of the stage where it is,
and there you may set
the bookmark made of lucky train ticket.
That is – we arrived …. to the station
with sad name – “SorrY”
And now we have transfer
to route of remarkable “50-ties”

Oh, no need those cheers!
Please command loud orchestra “Off!”
Is there any reason
for a party with standing ovation?
It was long ago,
when we were at “Village of Love”
And now we have often
to be at crossroads “Separation”.

Recall how we crafted
our fates and lives just recently,
and dramas felt fine
with some friends and some enemies by sides.
This days at the station
with strange and sad name of “SorrY”
we build no illusions,
have built for ourselves decent houses.

“Oh, sorry, but you
cannot stay for too long at this place,” -
the switchman directs,
pushing us forward to cataclysms.
Hear siren farewell
in the night from the great express trains -
“Vladimir Vysotsky”
and “Yuri Iosiphych Visbor”.

Don’t push the hard break,
no hysteria – “Final? – Not yet!”
Watch green traffic light,
that’s the color of hope, growth and balance.
Don’t listen to people,
who says “Our cinema dead”.
There will be more movies,
but roles for us are not majors.

For now we streamline
through the bores in rumors and claims
on weak shaky bridges
of lies and the insinuations*.
Straight-lined to reach
station named for common misfortune -“SorrY”,
where we will take new
line for cherished, precious “50-ties”.

This is a great song, unfortunately, I cannot say the same about translation. I am sorry, I don’t mean any offense, but it just seems bazaar to me.
What is the name of the station, for example? ‘Alas’ or ‘SorrY’ (whatever it means with the stress on ‘Y’). What is ‘the last page of the stage ’? Or ‘Oh, no need those cheers!’ ? And does ‘50-ties’ mean 1950’s? Or, like in the original, it is actually turning 50?

And the first 2 lines in all your transcriptions and translations should go to the author’s comments section. I am surprised, that admins haven’t slapped your hand for doing this yet

Dmytro's brought in fantastic songs. While we definitely disagree on translations, he made an invaluable contribution. I hope he will work on his translations, and I know we'd collectively like to help if our input is welcome.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Ven, 19/04/2019 - 21:36

Ladies, I don’t want anyone to delete this translation. 2 first lines are nor lyrics nor translation, so, they should go to the comments, this is all I said about it

And btw, it’s “igeethecat”, and there is a story, but you can call me Iggy, Maria, Masha, I don’t really care :)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Ven, 19/04/2019 - 22:04

I would just say something simple, like ‘five-zero’ - then everyone will know it is about the age :)

And about the station name - you have “Alas” in the title, which is perfectly fine, but then you introduce “SorrY”, which is totally confusing, especially with a capital Y at the end

Basically, this is a political statement. My questions to Dymytro would be why fifties are in quotes while Stalin's era became cherished and precious?! Its American equivalent of "take our country back" is nauseating.

I can't do 2-5. Sometimes, it happens naturally if rarely. I don't do word for word, but close to the meaning else translations take on a different meaning and while I enjoy poetical interpretations, they are usually aren't translations. Good night - need to save my eyes.

D, I insist that original lyrics mean 50 as a person’s age, not “crazy 50-“ties”” LOL

Since you are obviously do not accept criticism, do you mind if we will just rate your translations with stars?

PinchusPinchus    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 01:38

Маша (если позволите так Вас называть), это как бы само собой. Каждый вправе делать лучше или хуже, изо всех сил или абы как, возвращаться к переводу, дорабатывать позже, а все прочие вправе выставлять коньяку звездочки по своему вкусу. Но вот мне, например, право ставить звездочки не дали (ибо не флюент в английском), так что не забывайте, что это привилегия.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 01:47

PZ, не знаю как это будет по-русски «пззз», наверное :) обзывайте меня горшком, только в печь не сажайте ;)

Прелесть перевода - что он доносит смысл оригинала
Поправьте, если я ошибаюсь

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 01:52

42, вы совсем не русский? «Хоть горшком назови, только в печь не сажай»

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:13

So obvious! Я думала вы мне хотя бы кашу из топора подвалите ;)

PinchusPinchus    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:36

Я имел в виду: найдите в английском словечко, которое бы подошло для всех этих "котелков". Вот интересная задача. Тогда можно и переводить.

А это уже не перевод, а личное творчество переводчика, что вполне понятно и приемлемо как личное творчество. Вы можете публиковать здесь свои стихи. Это очень приветствуется и поддерживается

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:19

Да, мы здесь намного проще - просто переводим, чтобы понятно было всем, иногда - в рифму ;)
Присоединяйтесь к нам! Мы все очень хорошие и не хотим никого обидеть :)

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:24

О, нам очень нравятся песни из вашего архива :)

PinchusPinchus    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:00

Называйте меня хоть "п.з..ком", но "смысл" не дан нам в непосредственных ощущениях, это вещь головная, а значит "вкусовая". И "доносить" можно по разному, можно взять целую охапку яблок, а донести только одно, или взять яблоко, а донести грушу. Дело житейское, поэт и переводчик в одну реку не входят.

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:29

Ой, п.з. и ком, не войти вам дважды в одну реку, а насчёт запретных плодов - сами договаривайтесь. Груша вам в руки :)

PinchusPinchus    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:35

В смысле - клизму? Но клизма дважды не входит в одну и ту же э-э-э реку.

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 02:58

Guys, before the cleanup crew deletes all this rhetoric,
1. I really don't know if 50 is age of a person or 1950s - would be nice to get an expert opinion - couldn't find anything discussed. The structure of the song suggested it was curcuitous movement repeating patterns everyone recognized - lies, censure, persecution, suppression of the freedoms. So I leaned towards the fifties.

2. Our remarks need to stick to objectives. E.g.: I understood line alignment. No problem.

3. I didn't have time for a decent work to make my translation public, but as Dmytro asked, deleting mine for now.

4. Civility, please!

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 03:06

How пятидесятилетье can be confused with 50’s? D, you are not real Russian if you ask this :)

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 03:28

Lol, M, that's how we started: you told me I don't speak Russian. And I told you, I forgot Russian, didn't master English, practically down to zero on Italian, French and German are like they never were there. The other day, I noticed I wrote "u" in dispute... Lol, I saw dUspute and was wondering for a moment exactly what I was trying to say. I am certain you will let me know when time comes that I should stop contributing. I rely on you...

IgeethecatIgeethecat    Sab, 20/04/2019 - 04:39

Oh, yeah, I remember your’s (one of the) first Russian translation. I was brutal, I am sorry, but I pm’d you with my sincere corrections
But look where are we now... strong and friendly

Дмитро, страница должна показывать только текст песни и перевод. Всю дополнительную информацию Вы можете оставить в комментариях переводчика. Таковы правила, УВЫ!

Зачем спорить? Просто cut and paste your top to the submitters comments or to the end of lyrics separated by a --- line.
There is no need to say you are the author - it is automatically implied unless you site another source.

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Dom, 21/04/2019 - 01:13

Dora, this is about Sandring's note to avoid adding personal notes on the top of lyrics.

А мне кажется, если указывать авторство под переводом то так будет красивее.
