Guys, I need help to be able to interpret a phrase from the song "She" by the band "Jerusalem", because when I do the translation into Portuguese the whole stanza ends up losing its meaning a little.
The sentence is this: "Cause everyone else should 've"
the whole stanza is this:
"It broke his heart
Her heart grew cold
It was for her
He sacrificed his life
Oh, he dreamt about her
Just couldn't forget her
I know it's crazy
'Cause everyone else should' ve"
Thank's in advance
Hi, there. If 'she'/'her' refers to Jerusalem, then you could translate it as 'Oh, ele sonhou com ela / Ele não conseguia esquecê-la / Eu sei que é loucura / Porque todo mundo deveria esquecer'. For me, it sounds perfect and natural in Portuguese. I don't think sense would be lost - and that was how I'd personally translate those lines.
The composer of that line doesn’t seem to be a master of the English language because, as it is, it doesn’t make proper sense. What it should have been is:
He dreamt about her, just couldn't forget her. I know it's crazy ‘cause anyone else would have.
i. e. Any other man in that position would have simply forgotten all about that mean woman.
Obrigado pelo esclarecimento.
Thank's
Outra coisa que lembrei agora depois de reler o tópico. Você pode usar o que eu disse para se referir a qualquer mulher, não a alguma em específico. Da mesma forma que, se fosse para falar de um homem, você poderia usar 'esquecê-lo'.
Even as an English speaker I was thrown by the space in the last word. The last line in English should be "'Cause everyone else should've " ie should have forgotten her. So Alma Barroca's interpretation is reasonable.
Oh, he dreamt about her
Just couldn't forget her
I know it's crazy
'Cause everyone else should' ve"
Quite simple .. The first line "He dreamt about her" is linked with Cause everyone else should've ( done so) But better and more prolly a contrast/ linked with the "Couldn't forget her" / everyone did it / should've done so / succed it
Thank's
