Thank You, Mr. Edison

If you buy yourself a new record
That you put on your player at home
And listen to it a few times to the end,
And if you're tired of the new one,
Because you easily enjoy it,
Then you can hear Shalyapin1 on the radio as well.

You don't ask how and maybe you don't care,
But remember now with us, let's sing all together:

Chorus:
"Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For the useful device!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For thinking of us with this!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For your recordings!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For your whole life!"

A dog in front of the horn
Would listen to its owner,
And meanwhile the horn has turned into a loudspeaker,
But the dog is still here
And today you can either collect
Or give the piled up records of stars to someone as a gift.

When you hear this song, the world's already celebrating
The 100-year-old phonograph2, so let's sing:

Chorus: (×3)
"Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For the useful device!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For thinking of us with this!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For your recordings!
Thank you, Mr. Edison,
For your whole life!"

  • 1. A Russian opera singer from the early 20th century. His name is usually transliterated as Chaliapin in English, but I decided to use to phonetic transliteration because I find it more adequate and less misleading, especially for the ch sound, which is definitely not the same as sh.
  • 2. The phonograph (the predecessor of the gramphone, or the record player) was created in 1877 by Thomas Edison. Neoton Família recorded this song exactly 100 years later, thus the reference.
EN: If you have any suggestions about improving a translation (even if I haven't enabled the proofreading option), feel free to do so, I'll be really grateful for your help. In case you would like to use any of my translations anywhere, all I would like you to do in return is nothing but to mention where you've taken it from, and to notify me if possible. After all, other people's content should be given proper credit, right?

Commenti dell’autore:

As this is my first attempt at translating a song from Hungarian into English, I may have misunderstood one or two things, so any suggestions for improving it are more than welcome both by Hungarian and English natives. Regular smile
