The Bad Reputation

In town, without pretension
I have a bad reputation
Whether I go out of my way or I stay quiet
I look like a fool!
And yet, I don't do any harm to anyone
By following my own path of a little guy
But the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
No, the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
Everyone says bad things about me,
Except mutes, that goes without saying

The day of the fourteenth of July*
I stay in my cozy bed
Music marches to the beat of boots
This is no concern of mine
And yet, I don't do any harm to anyone
By not listening to the ringing bugle
But the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
No, the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
Everyone points their finger at me
Except armless people, that goes without saying

When I see an unlucky thief
Chased by a hick
I trip him
The hick ends up on the ground
And yet, I don't do any harm to anyone
By letting an apples' thief run
But the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
No, the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
Everyone rush over me
Except legless people, that goes without saying

No need to be Jérémie
To guess the fate promised to me
If they find a rope they like
They'll put it around my neck
And yet, I don't do any harm to anyone
By following the roads that don't lead to Rome
But the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
No, the good people don't like
Us to follow a different road than them
Everyone will come see me hanged
Except blind people, of course

I think Jeremiah is the correct translation, as Brassens must surely refer to the Biblical prophet.
