The People Are Mad
I'm on the run
And normally
I should take my medication
Without its aid
I'm going to start thinking I'm Napoleon again
In this big city
My hide-out is good
I'm left alone
Nobody suspects
That I'm crazy
I'm becoming a chameleon
The people are mad
Take away the jerrycans
The people are mad
They've got a hole in the head
The people are mad
It wouldn't surprise me if something catches alight
It's crazy
This flood of floating people
Their heads under the water
Their nerves wound up
Not a grimace between Picpus and Odeon 1
On the subway
Very uptight
Not one word too many
Two thousand MP3s flee the massacre 2
Of the fingering of the accordion's mother of pearl keys
The people are mad
Take away the jerrycans
The people are mad
They've got a hole in the head
The people are mad
It wouldn't surprise me if something catches alight
But the ambulance
Which is on my trail
Find me in a trance
In front of Austerlitz 3
With this pose
Hand under my jacket 4
And without any trousers
I take the capsule
That I'm given
In the padded cell
At Invalides 5
It's there that
Napoleon resides
The people are mad
Take away the jerrycans
The people are mad
They've got a hole in the head
The people are mad
It wouldn't surprise me if that something catches alight
The people are mad
Take away the jerrycans
The people are mad
They've got a hole in the head
The people are mad
It wouldn't surprise me if something catches alight

Ah it thought this was one of those times when the "ça" referred to the "gens" already mentioned
Yep - that's exactly the street scene I imagined.
It's a pretty standard cliché that in any set scene in a asylum (or "loony bin") there should be at least one Napoleon. Possibly several... Same in France?

Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine. Stai con l'Ucraina!
A really masterful translation. Thank you. I'd suggest, though, "medication" instead of "medicine" i.e. medicine prescribed to a particular patient which they take on some regular basis. Medication is of more common use when referring to chronic diseases. :)
