Paisatge de l'Ebre (Les sabates d'en Jaume)

Avui he tornat a la Serra de Pàndols
I, a la cova, he trobat
Les sabates d’en Jaume.

Un forat a les soles,
Una pinta de bales;
Dins d’un plat enfangat,
Tres cascots de metralla...

Dins d’un plat enfangat
Tres cascots de metralla:
A la cova han quedat
Les sabates d’en Jaume.

Landscape of the Ebro River (James' Shoes)

Today I have gone back to the Mountains of Pàndols 1
And, in the cave, I have found
James' shoes.

There was a hole in their soles,
A scattering of bullets;
In a muddy plate,
(There were) three pieces of shrapnel...

In a muddy plate,
(There were) three pieces of shrapnel:
In the cave, still remain
James' shoes.

  • 1. The Mountains of Pàndols-Cavalls was the scenario for one of the longest and most brutal periods in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and certainly the bloodiest part of the infamous Battle of the Ebro River, between the fascist military forces under General Franco and the forces loyal to the government of the Second Republic - it marked what was the collapse of the most important area of resistance against the fascist forces, and the retirement of international support with the disbandment and withdrawal of the International Brigades that had played an essential role in aiding the defence efforts of the Republican government.
