Out of Date

Out of date
Like a ballerina
At the Opera Garnier
Timeless yet...

Out of date
Poplin shirt
Sonnet by Mallarmé
Hardly insignificant yet...

Out of date
After the swan song
Out of date, left on the shelf
At The Grand Hotel
Not far from the pier
Memory of a memory

Out of date
Like the divine beauty
Of an Infanta in a corset
Unforgettable, but...

Out of date
Smoke from dance halls
The scent of sorbets
Irreplaceable, but...

Out of date
After the swan song
Out of date, left on the shelf
At The Grand Hotel
Not far from the pier
Laugh because it's better to laugh about it

Out of date
Like a large glass of gin
At the Plaza Athénée (luxury hotel)
Unforgettable, but...

Out of date
Like a ballerina
At the Opera Garnier
Timeless yet...

Your translation is very good. The "obscure" part must be a result of inaccurate lyrics (a missing comma and the hotel name written in lowercase). Here is my suggestion for this part:

Dépassé, mis à la consigne
Du Grand Hôtel ==>
Discarded, left on a shelf
At The Grand Hotel

About your remaining "question mark": I fully agree with your interpretation of this line. Just in case you are looking for some alternative ways of phrasing it, I would suggest:

"Laugh because you're better off laughing".
(Or, perhaps, "You're better off laughing it off").

"dépassée" has the same meaning as "surannée" could say "obsolete, outpassed"

"la consigne" at a hotel is the left-luggage room

the little french word "en" in this case means "about" " to laugh about it"

Thanks, though I like the 'left on the shelf' line, so I've left it in!
